This decision was taken during the Extraordinary Pancyprian Meeting of the Pensioners that was on Friday 11th April 2014 at the Conference Room of ETKA PEO in Nicosia.

The rally is being held on Tuesday 13th May outside the Presidential Palace in order to express the intensive complain of the pensioners for the arbitrary decisions taken by the government against them and without any dialogue. (TUI) of Retirees and Pensioners)

Odisha, POSCO, Water

Bhubaneswar, May 7 : Asking Odisha government to roll back its decision to allow South Korean steel major Posco to use water from rivers of Mahanadi and Hansua, three Left parties along with Samajwadi Party today threatened to launch an agitation.
The four parties – CPI, CPI(M), Forward Bloc and SP – in a joint statement said they would not allow Posco to use water meant for farmers and used for drinking by the people of undivided Cuttack district.
The statement signed by DibakarNayak (CPI), JanardanPati (CPI-M), PurnachandraPadhi (Forward Bloc) and Rabi Behera (SP) said the state government had in 2006 withdrawn its decision to allow 125 cusec of water from Naraj in Mahanadi river.
“Then in 2006, the state government had told Posco to arrange water for its use in view of public unrest. Now after 2014 polls, the state government has again allowed Posco to draw water from Mahanadi,” Nayak said.
Pati said allowing Posco to draw water from Mahanadi river would disturb irrigation in Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Kendrapara and Puri districts.
Similarly, the farmers of Cuttack sadar, Biridi, Raghunathpur, Tittol, Jagtsinghpur, Ersama and Balikuda would be affected if Posco draws water from Hansuariver, he said.
Meanwhile, Water Resources Secretary Suresh Chandra Mohapatra said Posco is allowed to draw water from Hansuariver for construction of its mega project near Paradip and water from Mahanadi for use in the steel plant. (PTI)

Lakhpat, the India Border

07 Wednesday May 2014

Yesterday, 6th May 2014, I got the opportunity to visit two border areas of India in Gujarat. One is Koteswar and the other is Lakhpat, which are both on the side of the Arabian Sea. I was accompanied by Coms. M.B.Chaniara, Circle Secretary AIBDPA, Vyas and  Pandey who are also active workers of AIBDPA.

From Koteswar it is only about 30 miles to Karachi in Pakistan across the sea. I was told by our comrades who were with me that some infiltrators have been caught here some time back.

Lakhpat is an old fort and a village inside, which has got a mosque and temple inside. Most of the buildings have been badly damaged or collapsed in the 2001 earthquake and barely there is anybody seen. We climbed one of the checkpost of the old fort, where BSF personnel were on duty. One of them was from Calicut District, which is my place also. The heat was above 45 degree and it was unbearable. The BSF soldiers were on duty for watching the long water border. Since it was low tide, the sea was about two km away, which in high tide will reach the shore.

I was really happy to meet and congratulate the BSF Personnel, who are defending the country. We all thanked them and returned.

Thousands/lakh of such soldiers are defending our country. My Heartfelt greetings and thanks to them.

BSNL, Kerala, profit

Kerala is one BSNL circle which has maintained the profitability all these years, even when there has been loss almost in every circle. Kerala had posted Rs, 284 crore in 2012-13. Now it is understood that the profit for 2013- 14 will be around Rs. 400 crore.

Our hearty congratulations for Kerala Circle and the workers there. If Kerala can make this  progress, all other circles can also do the same thing. In many circles, the loss has come down. It is the route to make profits in future.  Let all of us put our best for the people, for BSNL.

MAY dAY!

May Day Rally at Moscow on 1st May

International Workers’ Day was marked by widespread protests against austerity and attacks on workers’ rights, with major clashes with police in Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul, and in cities across Asia and Europe.

The biggest confrontation between workers and state forces came in Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey, after the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan banned marchers from entering the city’s central Taksim Square, the site of violent repression of anti-government protests last summer.

The authorities mobilized nearly 40,000 police, shut parts of the public transportation system, and set up steel barricades to divert marchers away from the square. Despite police firing tear gas and water cannon, thousands of demonstrators defied the government ban.

Nearly 100 people were injured and at least 200 arrested, according to press reports from the city. There was fighting in the Okmeydani district, a working class area, where marchers chanted the name of Berkin Elvan, who died March 11 after 269 days in a coma. The 14-year-old was hit by a police tear-gas canister fired during anti-government protests last year.

The government permitted 200 trade unionists to enter Taksim square to lay a wreath commemorating the deaths of 36 workers in 1977, when right-wing gunmen attacked a huge May Day gathering there. Workers’ protests were banned in the square from 1977 to 2010, and Erdogan reimposed the ban last year amid mounting unrest in the country.

There were widespread protests across east, southeast and south Asia, where industrial development over the past 30 years has created the largest working class in the world. Thousands marched in Seoul, Taipei, Hong Kong, Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Singapore and Phnom Penh.

In Manila, the Philippine capital, workers burned an effigy of President Benigno Aquino outside the presidential palace, accusing her of corruption and attacks on democratic rights. They chanted against rising prices and the replacement of regular employees by temporary workers.

In Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia, more than a thousand workers defied a government ban on protests and fought with security forces. Several dozen workers were beaten near a downtown park. The country’s fast-growing apparel industry has been hit by a wave of strikes.

Some 100,000 workers rallied in Jakarta, capital of Indonesia, demanding an increase of 30 percent in the minimum wage, and concessions on housing, education and public transportation. Union leaders have sought to curb working class unrest, expressed in a wave of strikes and in growing popular hostility to all the right-wing parties contesting the country’s parliamentary election.

There were sizeable protests against austerity policies across southern Europe, with large turnouts at Syntagma Square in Athens, in major cities in Italy, including Milan, Turin and Rome, and in Barcelona, Spain.

The largest demonstration in Europe took place in Moscow, where the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin staged a May Day parade in Red Square, the first since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. More than 100,000 took part.

Similar demonstrations were held in Simferopol and Sevastopol, the two main cities in Crimea, and in regional cities across Russia, as far east as Vladivostok.

The crowds were large, including 100,000 in Simferopol, the Crimean capital, and an estimated two million across the country, according to the trade unions.

The turnout showed popular hostility to the anti-Russian campaign by American and European imperialism over Ukraine, as well as giving a glimpse of the increasing social tensions within Russia, between the working class and the wealthy oligarchs who are the political base of Putin’s rule.

There were demonstrations in the Western Hemisphere as well, with thousands marching for immigrant rights in Los Angeles, and protests in many Latin American countries. (Courtesy: Ganashakti)
