CPI(M) calls all non-Congress secular parties to come together

Non-BJP, Non-Congress Parties

New Delhi, Nov 21 : CPI(M) today asked all non-
Congress parties to get together to thwart RSS-BJP from their
“frantic bid” to gain power through communal polarisation and
exploiting the “popular discontent” against the UPA-II
government.

“The growing popular discontent amongst our people must
be so mobilised that it finds an expression in a non-Congress, anti-BJP political alternative that shall pursue an
alternative policy direction for the country which will
provide the much-needed relief to the people and steer the
country on a sustainable path of economic development and
progress,” senior CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury has said.

In an editorial in the forthcoming issue of party organ
‘People’s Democracy’, he said BJP was attempting to “re-
polarise and further divide the people on communal lines
hoping that this would help it electorally. A crass effort of
practicing vote bank politics for consolidating the majority
vote bank.”

Noting that RSS-BJP were making “desperate efforts…in
their frantic bid to form a government in the post-2014
general elections,” Yechury said in order to achieve this, the combine “seems to be using all the weapons in their arsenal.”

“Their success will only herald the beginning of efforts
to completely negate and undermine the secular democratic
Indian Republic as we know of it today. This cannot be
permitted.”
He said the “RSS-BJP combine of communal forces cannot be
allowed to exploit the growing popular discontent arising out
of the anti-people policies of the current UPA-II government
to achieve their objective.”

The CPI(M) leader warned that the “mainstay” of the RSS-
BJP combine’s “arsenal” was “sharpening of communal
polarisation by creating antagonistic divisions between the
religious majority and the minorities particularly against the Muslims with all its gory consequences of communal riots,
bloodshed and mayhem.” (PTI)

National Council Meeting further delayed ?

BSNL, delayed, national council

It is now understood that that tentative date fixed for the National Council meeting is again postponed. The meeting was fixed for 9th December after continued demand from the Staff Side. Now the Management has postponed the date to 23rd December 2013. It is disturbing to note that the last meeting of the National council was held on 30th January 2013, almost 10 months back.
After the VI Membership Verification in April 2013 and grant of recognition to 2 unions, on this or that reason, the National Council had not met even once during the last 10 months. No Standing Committee meeting has also not been held for long time, even before the verification. This is intolerable delay.
The BSNL Management should understand that the negotiating machinery can not be kept non-working like this.

BSNL Management arbitrarily changes the convention of nominating in Joint Committees .

BSNL, Joint Committees, national council, representation

It was a practice all these years that when any joint committee of Official Side and Staff Side is formed, almost equal number of members from both the Official Side and Staff Side are nominated. But in the Joint Committee for recommending the PLI for BSNL employees, while 5 GMs represent the Official Side, there are only two from the Staff Side. This is deviation from the existing practice and is arbitrary. The intention seems to be to put undue pressure on the Staff Side to agree with the official side.

The Management should change its unfair line and allow staff side to nominate equal number of members to the Joint Committees, as per the existing practice.

Bharatiya Mahila Bank

Today Prime Minister inaugurated the first Bharatiya Mahila Bank (Indian Women’s Bank) at Nariman Point in Air India Building in Mumbai. Seven similar banks have been opened today itself all over India. All the employees in these Banks will be women. It is stated that 25 such banks will be opened by March 2014.
The banks are mainly intended for women, but deposits will be taken from men also.
Smt. Usha Ananthasubramaniam, who was Executive Director will be the Chairperson of the new bank.
This is a good start. Let more such banks be opened for the convenience of women.

Will Chile Continue with Left? In the first round Socialist leader Michelle Bachelet gets 46.77%.

Chile Elections, Socialists leading

Santiago, Nov 18 : Socialist Michelle Bachelet has won a first round of Chile’s presidential race, with voters putting her on track to replace a conservative after a runoff next month.

“We knew that it would be tough to win on the first round, we worked really hard, and we almost did it,” she told supporters.

“We did win tonight, and we are going to work hard to win

comfortably in December.”

Bachelet, Chile’s first woman president who worked as the head of UN Women after her first term in office, is now eyeing a potential non-consecutive second term as leader of the South American nation with the highest per capita income.

She was leading with 46.77 per cent of the vote against conservative Evelyn Matthei, at 25.05 per cent, with 89.99 per cent of the votes tallied yesterday.

Since Bachelet, who is seeking to succeed conservative billionaire President Sebastian Pinera, did not top 50 percent of the ballots, a run-off — also the country’s first between two women — was set for December 15.

“I am really pleased. We will have a runoff,” Matthei told reporters.

Matthei and Bachelet were trailed by independent economist Franco Parisi and Socialist Franco-Chilean filmmaker Marco Enriquez-Ominami, at about 10 per cent each, returns showed.

A pediatrician by training who was Chile’s first woman president from 2006 to 2010, Bachelet wants to overhaul the country’s political and economic system, a legacy of Augusto Pinochet’s 1973-1990 military dictatorship.

She has pledged to bring a “new cycle” of reforms to reverse the country’s wide income gap.

The 62-year-old wants to make abortion legal, and to raise business taxes to offer free university, answering the demands of a powerful student movement that led a series of massive protests since 2011.

The daughter of an air force general and a separated mother of three, Bachelet is supported by a “New Majority” alliance of socialists, Christian Democrats and communists.

As girls, Bachelet and Matthei played together on a military base in Chile’s parched north.

Chile has the highest GDP per capita in Latin America — USD 22,362 based on purchasing power parity — but half of the nation’s 17 million people make less than USD 500 per month.Outgoing Pinera, who cannot run for re-election, took office when Bachelet’s first term ended in 2010.

Balloting generally went smoothly, though a group of protesting students occupied Bachelet’s campaign headquarters calling for election reform. There were no immediate reports of damage or injury, however. (Courtesy: Ganashakti)

BSNL/MTNL

It is reported in the newspapers, that the government is proposing to make mandatory provisions for the government departments and PSUs to take only BSNL/MTNL telephone services. At present, many govt. offices and PSUs are using private telecom services. This is intended to help BSNL/MTNL as such an order was issued making it mandatory for all government officers to travel by Air India only.
This is one of the demand placed by the Forum of BSNL Unions/Associations to the Group of Ministers headed by Finance minister for revival of BSNL/MTNL. The Forum has also written to the Prime Minister and all Chief Ministers demanding that the Central/State governments and their PSUs be mandated to have BSNL/MTNL service only.
The government should immediately take this correct decision and implement the same without further delay.

On World Toilet Day, 50% Indians have no toilets!

World Toilet Day

19th November is the World Toilet Day. This day is being observed as part of the effort of the world to increase the facility of healthy and convenient toilet facilities to the entire population in the world.
India gives a poor picture in this respect. Approximately about 50% of the people, mainly in the slums, ghettos, villages and rural areas are compelled to defecate in the open in the absence of toilets.
One can see hundreds of people, including women and children, on the rail tracks and on the sides of the rail tracks in the morning, defecating openly. The sadness and anguish in their faces being put to such shame can never be forgotten.
What is the government and the society doing for these millions of people in the slums and ghettos? While a family have a 27 storey building for its own, when another gives a plane as a gift to his wife and the like, in the same country there are not toilets for millions to attend to calls of nature. What a shame for the country!
An effective campaign and agitation is required to compel the government to urgently attend to this acute problem.
