Airport -AAI -PPP

Com. Tapan Sen, M.P. and General secretary, CITU has demanded the government not to proceed with privatisation of the Chennai and Kolkata Airports. In a letter addressed to Shri Ajit singh, Minister for Civil Aviation, Com. Tapan Sen has pointed out that the modernisation of the Chennai and Kolkata Airports has already been started by the Airport Authority of India(AAI) and thousands of crore of rupees have already been spent. At this stage any PPP (Public-Private-Participation)programme has no meaning except to unduly benefit private companies. Both these airports are in profit and are running effectively. Further the Tripartitie Committee appointed by the government earlier has strongly recommended that the modernisation is to be done by AAI and not by any private participation.

Com.Tapan Sen, therefore, has demanded the Minister to drop the proposal for PPP in the modernisation of the Chennai and kolkata airports.

WFTU - COSATU

World Federation of Trade Unions(WFTU)is the strong and militant world organisation uniting a large number of trade unions in the world. The left TUs like CITU, AITUC are all affiliates of WFTU. Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), the militant and strong organisation of the workers of South Africa had discontinued its affiliation for some period. Now in the latest Conference of the COSATU held at Johannasburg from 17-20 September 2012, it had decided again to affiliate with WFTU. A great advancement for both COSATU and WFTU and world working class. My Congratulations!

Adamant Government issues orders on FDI in Retail and aviation

FDI - Retail trade - aviation

Despite the strong protest and opposition from opposition parties and also some UPA allies, the adamant Government issued orders today allowing 51% FDI in multi-brand retail and 49% FDI in civil aviation starting a new conquest for the MNCs and other foreign companies to take over the retail trade and airlines in the country. The government has once again shown its true face and also that it is fully succumbing to the dictates of US and other imperialist countries on how to bring so-called reforms in the country. The FDI in multi-brand retail, which the government could not pass in the Parliament due to strong opposition and lack of numbers, it has issued as an order after the Parliament session is over. And without considering its drastic consequences, the Congress led state governments are going to implement.

There is no other way before the people but to continue its strong protest and ensure that the UPA government can not continue like this.

Protest Day/ Bharat Bandh on 20th September

Protest Day - Bharat Bandh

The All India Protest Day /Jail Bharao/Rasta Roko programme organised by the eight non-BJP, non-Congress parties including the four Left parties against the anti-people policies of the UPA government was a big success in most of the states. BJP had called for a Bharat Bandh also. The strong protest of the people against the increase in diesel price, 51% FDI in multi-brand retail which will result in the collapse of the small retail trade on which more than 5 crore people earn their living, 49% FDI in aviation which will result in the take over of Indian companies by MNCs etc. was supported by the people on a large scale. Many trains were stopped by the protesters. Shops remained closed and buses and other vehicles did not ply. The people fully co-operated with Bandh. The strong protest was a slap on the face of the UPA government which has surrendered to the interests of the MNCs and imperialist countries, specially US.

In Delhi a big protest demonstration was held near Jantar Mantar and all India leaders courted arrest.  After holding a joint demonstration at Jantar Mantar, the leaders of SP, four Left parties, JD(S), TDP and BJD marched to Parliament Street Police Station along with supporters and courted arrest.
Besides Yadav, Karat (CPI-M)and Bardhan (CPI), other prominent leaders who courted arrested included Sitaram Yechury (CPI-M), Chandrababu Naidu of TDP and Deve Gowda(JD-S).

Bharat Bandh against anti-people measures of UPA government

Bharat Bandh - antipeople measures

Today, 20th September, there is a Bharat Bandh called by the opposition parties as also some of the allies of the UPA Government against the intolerable price rise, increase in the price of diesel, FDI in multi-brand retail and selling of PSUs. Many central TUs have supported the Bandh. From the morning reports in the media, the Bandh seems to be a great success with the Bandh affecting almost all the states and especially major cities.

The government has lost its majority in the Parliament with the TMC withdrawing support. But there seems to be no threat to the government which is capable of garnering support by any means, ethical or unethical, using cash or giving benefits or by any kind of corrupt practices as we have seen when the Left Parties withdrew support to the UPA-I government.

However, the moral and ethical authority of the UPA government is already lost. The best way for the government is to withdraw the anti-people measures and salvage the situation.

Roll Back These Anti-People Measures – CPI(M)

price rise, Roll back FDI

I am reproducing the press statement issued by the CPI(M) demanding roll-back of the anti-people measures:

The UPA government has been plunged into a crisis after the  announcement by the Trinamul Congress of the withdrawal from the government and  the UPA.

The Manmohan Singh government had announced FDI in retail  trade, sharply increased the price of diesel, limited the supply of cooking gas  cylinders and initiated disinvestment in some of the top public sector  enterprises. These policies and measures are totally against the interests of  the people of the country.

None of these measures have the support of parties across  the political spectrum. It is clear now with the stand taken by the allies of  the Congress in the UPA that a majority of the members of Parliament are against  these policies. The Congress-led UPA government does not have the mandate or the  right to push ahead with these policies.

The CPI(M) will intensify the struggle against these  measures to get them reversed. All parties who have come out against these  policies should support the all India protest action on September 20. Unless the  Manmohan Singh government rolls back these anti-people measures, it has no right  to continue in office.

44th Anniversary of Historic One Day Token Strike by CG Employees

1968 CGE strike - P&T

19th September 1968 is a memorable day in the annals of the struggles of the Central Government employees. It was on this day lakhs of CG employees went on a historic strike demanding Need Based Minimum Wag,e, DA etc., defying all black laws and threats including the Essential Service Maintenance Act. There was no other way for the unions other than to go on strike, since the government denied the justified demands of the workers.

The strike was only for one day, a token strike. But the entire country was paralysed with employees of Railways, Posts and Telegraphs and other CG services on strike. It was dealt by the Central Government with all its mighty state apparatus. Thousands of employees were arrested, jailed, dismissed, suspended, terminated and imposed with  heavy punishments.

But the workers fought back and by about two to three years almost all the dismissed/terminated employees could be reinstated. But all the victimisation could not be cancelled and suffered not only till retirement but in pension also.

It was a heroic struggle well knowing the consequences. But it had  its results. Gradually the government was compelled to agree to many of the demands. No struggle is in vain.

None of those valiant comrades who participated in the strike are in service now, since all of them might have retired by this time. But till their last, all of them will have the memory of this great struggle.

It was a historic strike indeed!

Trinamool Congress quits UPA – A report from the Press

Trinamool - UPA - Protest

Trinamool Congress, the second biggest constituent of the UPA, today dealt a major blow to the Manmohan Singh government when it decided to withdraw its support on the issue of petroleum price hike, FDI in retail and corruption.
“We are withdrawing our support. Our ministers will go to Delhi, meet the Prime Minister and tender their resignations at 3 PM on Friday,” TMC chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced after a meeting of party MPs, top leaders and office bearers. However, Banerjee added a caveat saying if the Centre rolls back the decision on FDI in multi-brand retail, raises the cap on supply of subsidised LPG to 12 cylinders and reduces diesel price hike from Rs.5 to Rs.3 or Rs.4, then the party would reconsider the decision to withdraw support.
She said the Central government was not not a one-party rule.  “The government depends on the support of others. But in Bengal, we have a majority of our own and we are not dependant on others,” she said.
Banerjee ruled out supporting the government from outside saying her decision was “not half-hearted”.
Widening the attack on Congress, she brought in issues like coal block allocation scam, black money and fertilizer price rise.
“The FDI decision was taken to suppress the coalgate issue,” the West Bengal Chief Minister said.
Accusing the Congress of indulging in “blackmail politics”, she said whenever it has trouble with any of its allies, it goes to the other.
“When it has problem with Mayawati, it goes to Mulayam.  When it has problems with Mulayam, it goes to Nitish (Kumar of JD-U) and it is like that,” Banerjee said.
Referring to the FDI decision, she said there are 50 million people in unorganised retail sector. “Where will these people go? There will be disaster. It has not been sustainable even in the West.” While accusing Congress of indulging in “blackmail” politics, the Trinamool chief said, “somebody has to bell the cat.”
She revealed that she had conveyed her opposition to FDI decisions directly to Congress President Sonia Gandhi but it did not work.
Banerjee also criticised Finance Minister P Chidambaram’s statement yesterday ruling out rollback on FDI.
She said after all these steps, the Congress would now allow even Pension Bill and vowed to oppose it tooth and nail in Parliament.
“If we don’t take a decision, they will even allow foreign players in pension sector. We can’t tolerate,” she said.
“We will not tolerate any anti-people decisions and we will oppose everything,” she said.
She said her party would not be responsible if the country was forced to go for a mid-term poll.
“This government can stay for three months or six months, I don’t know. They have lost the credibility. And if they cannot maintain friendship with us, then they cannot maintain friendship with anybody,” Banerjee said.
She also raked up the blackmoney issue, questioning why the government has not taken steps to bring it back (Courtsey: Ganashakti)
