It seems that for the first time, there is a decline in the number of mobile connections in the country. As per the reports in the press, the mobile connections in the country have come down by a few percentage in August 2012. The connections of Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance and other operators have come down. The situation of the BSNL is yet to be known. As soon as the report of the TRAI for August is published, the correct information will be known.
Is the Indian Teledensity saturated or is it only a temporary phase?
It is not in August’12 only, in July’12 itself, Wireless Telephony (GSM+CDMA) segment of India, registered a net decline in subscribers’ number first time in many years, that too to the tune of a whopping 2.06 crore (2.21%) in a single month. Reliance alone shed 2.05 crore connections. It is followed by Tata (-24.1 lac), Uninor (-10.8 lac) and 3 other companies. Wireless Tele-Density declined by 2.31% from 76.99 in June’12 to 75.21 in July’12. Overall Tele-density also suffered a setback — 2.25% in one month from 79.58 in June’12 to 77.79 in July’12. All these details are available in my analysis of TRAI Data for the month of July’12, available on BSNLEU CHQ website http://www.bsnleuchq.com.
Now, report comes in that the trend has escalated in August’12 when big names in Indian Wireless Telephony like Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Idea etc. have confronted with the same fate. An interesting stage in the Indian telecom sector is awaiting us. We have to keep a watchful eye on the emerging scenario to play a due role.
