A large number of unions around the Manesar plant of the Maruti-Suzuki are going on a two hour strike today, 13th June, in support of the strike of the Maruti workers continuing for the last ten days for recognition of their union and reinstatement of the leaders who have been retrenched after the union was formed. It is reported that more than 60 unions with tens of thousands of wokers will be on strike.
But still the Haryana Government is keeping mum or rather supporting the management in its anti-worker stand.

UPA II Government involved in one more scam – now it is oil exploration

13 Monday Jun 2011

It seems that there is no Ministry of the UPA II government, which is free from scam of thousands of crores of rupees. The latest is in the oil exploration. The CAG has slammed the Government favouring the private companies – Reliance Industries owned by Mukesh Ambani and Cairn India Limited.
As per reports published in the news media today, the CAG has pulled up the Oil Ministry for allowing the Reliance Industries Ltd. to violate the terms of contract with government in the case of Andhra offshore fields. In the same way it also favoured the Cairn India Limited in its operation in Rajasthan’s Barmer District.
These undue favours to the private sector companies have not only resulted in loss of thousands of crores of rupees to the nation, but have also discriminated against the public sector companies.
Which is the next minitry going to be under lens of either the CAG or the Supreme Court?

A Birthday party at Claytopia

12 Sunday Jun 2011

It was a very interesting birthday party! The birthday was of my eight years grand daughter, Arya. Though her date of birth is 8th June, it was celebrated today, 12th, since friends and families could be available only on a holiday.Today being Sunday, it was selected.
The party was arranged at Claytopia, a small restaurant in the Bangalore city. The invitees were mainly Arya’s class mates, children of family friends and some children from the nearby flats. It was a children’s party. The children presented Arya with beautiful presents. After the invitees have arrived, the children were given fruit juice. Next, they were all given pots, animals, flowers etc. made from clay to paint with different colours. The paints, brushes, water etc. were provided. The hosts, mainly girls from North East States helped and guided the young children to paint. It was just like some painting competition with about twenty children painting with oncentration. When they finished the painting, it was collected by the hosts with the respective names written on the clay models. It will be given back about one week after glazing them.
Next was a training in making clay pots. A young man was at the potter’s wheel. He helped each child in making the pots from the clay by rotating the wheel and moulding the clay in to various shapes of pots. Those pots were handed over to the children eventhough not dried.
Third proramme was tattooing. A woman tattoed flowers, micky mouse, animals etc. in the arms of the children in various colours.
The beautiful birthday cake was cut after that with all the children singing the “Happy Birthday…”. First the cake and then al the food items prepared for the party. After all the games, the little children enjoyed the food also.
It was almost two hours by now. All the children were taken to their homes with some small gifts which they cherished.
There were few old people like me, but it was a children’s party and they enjoined it. Of Course our family also enjoyed it along with others.

I am in Bangalore, the IT city.

12 Sunday Jun 2011

I am in Bangalore along with my wife for the last three days at my daughter’s home to attend the birthday of my grand daughter. The days have been happy since you don’t get much time otherwise for this luxury due to continuous union activities at New Delhi.
Bangalore is an IT city and lakhs of youngsters are working in IT as also other latest technologies and businesses. The city has grown tremendously during the last twenty-twenty five years. Skyscrapers have risen everywhere with a large number of flats for accommodting the employees who are coming from all parts of the country. Sons and daughters of many of our comrades in the union, relatives and friends are working here. Every time I come to Bangalore, I wish atleast to meet some of them. But the time of my stay is so short, the traffic is jampacked and there is much distance from one palce to another. And you can meet them only on Saturdays or Sundays and everybody is engaged with their own personal works on these days. And of course my planning is also not up to the mark.
The new generation will have their own plans and methods of keeping their contact with their friends and relations. We have to learn from them so that we are also up-to-date.

What is happening in W.Bengal?

12 Sunday Jun 2011

From the day the elections results have come out with big victory for the Trinamool Congress, its goons along with Maoists have been attacking the supporters and workers of the Left Parties and their trade unions. Many trade union offices have been ransacked and captured by the Trinamool goondas and workers beaten up. Dozens of cadres of Left parties have been murdered. People who support the Left are threatened and compelled to leave their homes.
The attack has started on the BSNLEU offices also. The workers are resisting these onslaughts. The entire democratic movements have to strongly oppose the goonda tactics of Trinamool and Maoist atrocities and demand stringent actions to stop the same.

Maruti workers continue struggle for right to organise

All the trade unions and the democratic movements in the country have to strongly protest against the pro-management stand of the Haryana and Central Governments in not coming forward to settle the demands of the Maruti workers who are on strike for the last 10 days for the right to organise themselves and against victimisation for trade union activities.
The Haryana Government is fully on the side of the Maruti Management. Its stand has been exposed in the earlier struggle of the Honda workers, when the workers were lathi-charged and taken in to custody by the police on the pressure of the management. The Central trade unions have intervened but there has been no improvement in the situation.
Is there no right in this country for the workers to organise themselves?

Odisha peoples’ fight against POSCO, Korean Steel MNC

12 Sunday Jun 2011

The people of Odisha continues their fight against the taken over of their land by the Korean Steel MNC. The entire people of the area which has been cleared by the Orissa and also Central Governemnt for takeover by POSCO are in arms. While the Environment Minister Jayram Ramesh did not agree to approve the project which is completely anti-environmental and also will displace thousands of families, succumbed to the pressure of the UPA and Orissa governments as also the MNC.
About 3700 acres lying in the Jagatsinghpur are cleared for acquisition. Even the children are involved in the struggle against acquisition. Hundreds of children blocked the police from entering the villages.
The Central and state governments should cancel the clearance and save the environmental and human concerns. Otherwise, the struggle will increase as in the case of Nalco, where the people won by stopping the privatisation by strong popular struggle.
I wholeheartedly support the struggle of the against the acquisition of land of the people in Orissa.

The cash starved Air India has been alotted Rs. 250 crore by the Central Govenment mainly for payment of salaries, which have already been delayed. The pro-private sector policies and wrong decisions along with the mismanagement have created the present fiasco.
But the workers have started resisting and the recent strike of the Air India pilots have exposed the governments dirty role. The working class have to support this just struggle of the Air India workers.

Is there no right for workers to organise? Maruti workers on agitation

THe more than 2500 workers of Maruti factory in Manesar ( Haryana) are on strike for the last 8 days demanding that their union be recognised by the management. Out of the 3500 or so workers 2500 belong to the newly formed union, which is not affiliated to any central trade union. The workers are agitating against not only the refusal to recognise the newly formed union, but also against retrenchment of 11 leaders of the union. The workers allege that the managmenet is compelling them to join the union of the Gurgaon plant, which according to them is a management pliant union and which has not been taking the issues of the workers of the Manesar plant. The workers are sitting inside the factory premises in their uniforms.
The management, instead of discussing with the agitating workers has taken the help of the police and the state government to crush the strike. The state government has unilaterally declared the strike as illegal.
The workers in the nearby auto factories led by AITUC, CITU, HMS etc. have declared support and may go on solidarity strike.
The Haryana Government is supporting the management against the right of the workers to form union. The struggle for the right to organise will continue.
