The Dark face of Delhi

15 Wednesday Jun 2011

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in News

If you go through the ‘Times of India’,’Hindustan Times’ or any other newspaper published from Delhi, you can see a lot of local news regarding chain snatching, goondaism, rape, muder, cheating, vandalism and so on. It is here that Jessica, a bar attender, was shot and murdered in front of dozens or even hundreds of people, but there was nobody to give evidence, and even the few prepared to give evidences changed their versions due to fear or otherwise.
I had a personal experience today, 15th June. It was about 07.30 hours in the morning and I was having my morning walk on the foot path on the side of the road from Gole Market to Connaught place. Just before Connaught place, in front of the Medical College, three youngsters, seemingly goondas, were harassing a women about 20-25 years and threatening her. She, all of a sudden crossed the road to the other side and started walking quickly. One of the goonda ran after her, pulled her and started beating. The other two also reached by the time. She was pleading something but the goonda continued to hit her on her shoulder and abodmen. Security persons engaged at the Medical College gate, on the gates of the Sivaji Stadium and other people on the way were looking but nobody intervened. An auto riksha came by that time and she was bundled and the the goondas also got in and sped away. Since I was not having the mobile phone, I could not even contact the police.
Whatever it was, a young woman was harassed and beaten on a busy road, but nobody came to her rescue. The goondas could have been stopped or got arrested, if at least some five-ten people joined together. But nothing happened. It is not only the fear of goondas, I think. The people take it casually and they are never bothered what is happening to a poor woman.
I just thought about what will be the position in Kerala if a such a thing happened on the busy road. I am sure that the goondas might have been tackled by the people and the woman saved. In many other places also.
The people of Delhi has to rise up against injustice and crimes.

Petroleum scam – UPA government in serious trouble

15 Wednesday Jun 2011

The draft report of the CAG on the undue favours shown to Reliance and other private oil companies in the grant of licence and acquisition of additional land etc. has exposed another serious scam. Though the CAG has not quantified the loss to the government. it is assumed that it will be more than the 2G scam. The UPA II Government is in serious trouble with so many scams to face the next session of the Parliament.

Heroic Struggle of Maruti-Suzuki Workers

maruti, maruti strike

The 2500 and odd workers in the Maruti-Suzuki plant at Manesar (Haryana) are continuing their struggle on the 12th day for the right to organise and against retrenchment of their 11 leaders. Their main two demands are that their union which represents more than 80% of the workers should be recognised by the management and that their leaders who have been retrenched for forming the union should be reinstated. The tool down strike called by the trade unions in the Manesar area in support of the Maruti strike has been postponed on the request of the Haryana Government which is in discussion with the management and the workers.
All the striking workers are in the company compound only. They have not gone outside though the toilet facilities etc. are completely insufficient. They are wearing the same uniforms they have worn for the last 11 days. It is a struggle for the right of the workers to organise. The Government should immediately intervene and make the adamant management to agree to the reasonable and fully justified demands of the workers. The entire trade unions in the country should support this struggle.

Govt. to sell more PSUs

14 Tuesday Jun 2011

Four more sick PSUs are going to be sold shortly. The Government is finalising its programme for sale of Hindustan Cables Limited, Hindustan Machine Tools Limited, Thungabhadra Steel Limited and Richardson & Cruddas. Hindustan Cables Limited is closely connected with telecom and has been supplying Cables for the DoT earlier and to BSNL and MTNL later.
Already the Government has sold Power Finance Corporation Limited for a meagre amount of Rs. Rs. 1,162 crore. Scooters India Limited is also under sale.
The UPA II government is on an agressive selling mode. Before the completion of its five year term it wants to hand over maximum number of PSUs to the private sector as part of the LPG policy.

BSNL to share towers with private companies?

14 Tuesday Jun 2011

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in BSNL News

It is reported that MTNL has decided to share its towers with the private companies to mop up additional funds to make up the loss incurred by it. MTNL has posted a loss of about Rs. 2,800 crores in 2010-11. It has got about 1400 towers in Delhi and Mumbai where it operates. It is understood that Expression of Indents (EoI) has also been called for the sharing business.Earlier also MTNL had sharing agreements with some private companies.
It seems that BSNL is also on the look out for sharing of its 40,000 or so towers. It had posted a loss of Rs.1823 crores in 2009-10 and is having more loss in 2010-11, which will be known when the accounts for the year are finalised.
The moot question is whether it will benefit the PSUs or will result in complication and loss of business in the long run? A serious examination is necessary.

Where are the telephone Instruments and broadband modems?

13 Monday Jun 2011

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in BSNL News

The Joint Action Committee of BSNL Associations/Unions have been continuously pressing the management to make available suffcient number of telephone instruments, cables, mobile equipments and broadband (Type I and II) modems to ensure that the faulty instruments are changed, faults removed and new broadband and mobile connections igiven, which will help BSNL to improve its performance and provide new BB connections.
Assurances have been given by the top management several times, but alas! the implementation of the assurances are yet to take place. The pace in which the management moves is so slow. that instead of growth, there will be downfall.
The JAC has to take necessary actions to make the management really moves and the supplies are provided so that the Customer Delight Month is successful and BSNL grows, grows faster.
