‘Time for Rahul to become PM’ – Digvijay Singh

20 Monday Jun 2011

Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh has stated that ‘it is time that Rahul Gandhi became PM’. Congress leaders have started pushing the name of Rahul for the top most of Prime Minister. Is it that Congress wants to get rid of Manmohan Singh who is under cloud of so many mega scams in his Government in which some are coming in his direction? Or is it to curry favour with Rahul Gandhi?

The four Left Parties viz. CPI(M),CPI, AIFB and RSP, has decided to organise a countrywide movement against corruption demanding immediate measures to curb corruption in all spheres of public life. The demands of the Left parties are:
1. Adoption of an effective Lokpal legislation
2. National Judicial Commission to curb corruption in high judiciary
3. Stringent action against the rampant corruption fostered by the big business-politician-bureaucratic nexus which has led to scandal like 2G spectrum
4. Implementation of electoral reforms including introduction of proportional representation system to check money power in elections.
5. Steps to unearth black money and repatriation of the illegal money stashed abroad.

A massive movement will be organised on these demands from 15th to 21st July 2011 all over the country. During this period the Left parties will picket central government offices, hold demonstrations, dharnas and rallies. A demonstration outside parliament also will be organised during Parliament session.

Surrender of Gwalior Fort and the end of War of Independance 1857-58

20 Monday Jun 2011

The great saga of the War of Independence came to an end on 20th June 1858 with the surrender of Gwalior Fort to the British. One after another, the leaders of the Indian side were either killed or made prisoners. Before the military might and the shrewd scheming of the British Empire, the Indians could not withstand further. After the heroic fight of more than one year, the war ended with victory to the British.
The British were cruel and vengeful. They hanged hundreds of prisoners, took away the land and forts of the defeated kings and Nawabs and favoured those who supported them.
But the end of the first war independence was not the end. A new struggle has already started. The Indian National Congress was formed in 1885, which started as a moderate organisation, grew in to a mighty force and a sustained struggle started for independence which became successful on 15th August 1947.

DOT supports Raja. Says he was following existing policy!

19 Sunday Jun 2011

The UPA II Government is supporting former Minister Raja stating that the latter was only following the past policy of the NDA government. In its presentation before the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), the DOT officers has virtually justified the action of Raja stating that the allotment of spectrum in 2008 was done as per the past policy.
Raja is chargesheeted and is in custody in Tihar Jail. The CAG had stated that there has been a loss of 1.76 lakh crore to the government due to the 2008 spectrum allotment on the basis of fist come first served. CBI has estimated Rs. 30,000 loss.
It seems that the Central Government is continuing its position as explained by the present telecom Minister Kapil Sibal that there is ‘zero loss’ in the allotement of spectrum. The Government will naturally want to hush up the scam gradually and this is a clear indication.

ILO adopts resolution on labour rights to domestic workers

19 Sunday Jun 2011

The International labour Organisation (ILO) in its recent 100th Annual Convention has adopted a resolution, The Convention on Domestic Workers (2011), stating that the domestic workers must have basic labour rights as enjoyed by other workers. India opposed it in the initial stage but had to support at the final stage since the convention was being supported by the huge majority of the nations. The convention was adopted by a vote of 434 with 8 against and 42 abstentions.
Each country has to ratify the convention. Will the government of India ratify the convention or delay it as in the case of Convention on Rights to Organise?

Will C-DOT resume R&D ?

19 Sunday Jun 2011

C-DOT initially had done good research and developmental work in its early period, which helped the growth of telecom in India. But due to the neglect of the government and the meagre funds alloted, many of the promising young engineers have left and there was not much R and D.
As per the statement of Shri V.V.R.Satry, Executive Director, C-DOT is going in a big way for R and D. especially in introducing 4G services. I am very happy to read the statement.
But whether the Government will give support and financial assistance? Let us see.

Suffering Elders of Delhi and Elsewhere

19 Sunday Jun 2011

Senior citizens, old people, in Delhi are a tortured lot. They are mostly humiliated and abused by their relatives as per a recent study made by the Help Age India. Children have grown and many of them are working in other cities. The parents are isolated. Some of them never goes out. Gradually they feel that their existence has no meaning and and die several times before actual death.
Most of the parents are ignored by their children after some time. They stay separately. In big cities like Delhi you can read news every day about senior citizens being killed money, jewellery etc. There are no safeguards.
In some families the elderly people are beaten and physically and mentally abused. There is nobody to help them. Even when complained to the police, the latter don’t take any action. The old people are a vulnerable lot. The study shows that the parents are abused both by sons and daughter-in-laws. If son and daughter don’t care, then who will care?
An effective system to care for the aged should be there. Whether the Government will do anything in this matter?

How quick the years are passing! It seems that Comrade K.Adinarayana, the veteran leader of the P and T movement is still with us. But it is full eight years since he has passed away from us on 17th June 2003.
Com.Adi, as he is affectionately called was involved in mass movements from a very young age which resulted in his discontinuing formal education itself. He was jailed for three and half years during 1950-53 for participation in the great Telengana movement. He joined P and T Department in 1954 as ED. He retired in June 1986 as LSG clerk. From day one of joining the P and T he was in the movement. He was elected as the General Secretary of Postmen and Class IV Union in 1968 and continued till 1997. He was elected as Secretary General, NFPE in 1992 and vacated the position in 2001 due to ill health.
His life was full of struggles. He was a persuasive speaker and negotiator. Continous struggles of the Postal workers under his inspiring leadership is part of history now.
I had close association with comrade Adi for along period which increased after my election as President of All India Telecom Employees Union in 1991 and shifted to Delhi from Calicut, Kerala. He was always an elder brother to me guiding in our activities.
I pay my respectful homage to Comrade Adi on his death anniversary.
