BSNL should stop the retrenchment of the contract workers

BSNL contract workers, Retrenchment

BSNL Corporate office has issued certain instructions to reduce the number of contract workers from the present strength, even to the extent of 10% / 20% on the plea of reducing expenditure of the company. On the basis of the same, many CGMs/GMs have started retrenchment.

BSNLEU and BSNLCCWF has strongly opposed this ill-motivated move. There is no doubt that BSNL is in difficult financial position. The revenue has to be increased and certain measures to reduce the expenditure is also necessary. The workers and their unions are fully with the management in improving the services and also revenue. It is due to the hard work of the employees and casual / contract workers that BSNL is able to provide more connections each month, despite lack of spectrum and latest technology. If the government is prepared to provide BSNL with 4G/5G spectrum to BSNL, the growth of BSNL will be phenomenal, despite predatory pricing by Reliance Jio. Government, the owner of the BSNL and MTNL is unfortunately favouring the private companies and strangulating the PSUs, BSNL and MTNL.

The casual and contract workers are continuing in DOT/BSNL for about 20 to 30 years. Many are going to reach 60 years. Their entire life has been spent by working for DOT/BSNL, even though they were being paid meagre wages and even which was usurped by the contractors and some of the corrupt officers. As long as the exploitation continued, the number of casual/contract workers increased. But due to formation of BSNLCCWF and sustained struggles, when the contractors are compelled to pay the wages as per Minimum Wage fixed by the Chief Labour Commissioner, the authorities and the contractors want to reduce the workers to teach them a lesson. This is condemnable.

Retrenchment is not a solution. By retrenchment, the present work is reduced adversely affecting the services. Many of the works of the 2 lakh employees retired, the contract workers are doing. Retrenching them is not only against the interests of the BSNL, but also is a crime against the workers who worked their entire life / many years for the company.

There are many areas where unnecessary expenditure can be reduced just like foreign trips, purchase of unwanted equipment, utilisng the vacant buildings and staff quarters, selling the scraps, strict control over the purchase of diesel and petrol, austerity in the use of electricity, restricting unofficial use of vehicles, reducing outsourcing, strict collection of dues from subscribers and government departments, pulling up the corrupt officials etc. These are only some measures, but after careful study by the management in discussion with the unions can find out much more. It is to be noted that these contract workers who are working 10 to 12 hours or more are not getting even 5% of the wages that the top officers in the company are being paid.

Thousands of families are going to be starved, if the retrenchment takes place. This is to be stopped. Management should drop the idea to retrench contract workers. Many are going to be 60 years of age and gradually the number will come down also. They should be provided with gratuity etc.as per rules.

BSNLCCWF and BSNLEU are making all efforts and united struggles to ensure that these long serving workers are not retrenched. We demand the management to stop the present move to retrench the workers immediately.

Retrenchment, WIPRO

IT major WIPRO Limited is proposing to retrench about 600 workers. Its argument is the retrenchment is necessary to make the company more efficient. Such flimsy arguments are always floated to justify hire and fire / retrenchment.

Cognizant, Retrenchment

Cognizant Technologies Solutions, a major IT company, which has got ten units in India, is on a retrenchment mode. Almost 10,000 employees are being sent out by retrenchment or resignation. The units are at Bengaluru, Chennai, Kochi, Coimbatore, Mangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune, Gurugram and Kolkata. Those who do not resign even after pressure may be retrenched out right. This is the method of the MNCs and Indian corporates. Hire and Fire is the method and the government usually does not interfere in the matters of the corporates. It is time that strong trade unions are formed in the IT sector to resist such attacks on the workers.

SBI-SBT Merger – 1250 temporary workers on retrenchment threat

Retrenchment, SBI-SBT Merger

1250 temporary workers who were working in the 850 branches of the State Bank of Travancore (SBT) are under threat of retrenchment. It is reported that direction has already been issued to terminate them. This is preposterous and against labour laws. These workers are engaged for a long period. They were being exploited by denying full wages and now they are being retrenched. In addition to the trade unions, the Government and the Labour Department should intervene in the matter and ensure that they are not retrenched.

It is also to be well understood that the SBI-SBT merger and connected decisions are not isolated ones, but the well planned conspiracy of the government, MNCs and Indian Corporates to finish the PSU Banks and allow the former to take over the banking industry in the country. Working class can not allow this loot of this country.

Siemens, which is the German based engineering MNC, has stated that it will slash about 2,500 jobs, which means retrenchment of so much existing workers.

This is an indication of the worldwide reduction of work force. The MNCs in India have been retrenching the workers in a big way and struggles continue against the same.

Task Force to reduce central staff

Government constitute Task Force to reduce staff

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has constituted a five-member task force to rationalise central government staff and ensure their maximum optimisation.

The task force will be headed by Establishment Officer and Additional Secretary in Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) Rajiv Kumar and it will submit its report next month.” (Press Release by Government)

This is clearly a move to reduce the staff strength. Due to ban on recruitment, the staff strength in the Central Services has gone down drastically. Thousands of employees are retiring every month, but the recruitment is very less. The government is proposing to further reduce the number.  The Central government employees’ organisations have to fight this attack on the workers.

Renault Nissan Factory at Chennai cut about 1,000 jobs

Renault Nissan, Retrenchment

The ‘Hire and Fire’ continues by the private companies. It is the auto maker Renault Nissan Chennai Factory this time. Out of the 8,000 and odd workers, 1,000 are going to be terminated on the plea low demand in the market. Further, the MNCs and Indian corporates are becoming more bold to do whatever they want, since they are confident that the Modi Government will not interfere.

The workers are not going to accept this job cut. Struggles will certainly erupt to save the jobs.

Retrenchment, TCS employees

The employees of the the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), one of the biggest IT services company in the country, have strongly protested against the move of the TCS management to retrench thousands of employees. They have also decided to organise a meeting of the employees on 7th February 2015 at Bengaluru to discuss and make future plans to oppose and defeat the retrenchment.

We fully support the move of the TCS employees to resist retrenchment. We also demand the TCS management to cancel their retrenchment programmes and take back all the retrenched employees.

Foxcom, Retrenchment, TCS

Foxcom company is moving towards shutting its Chennai unit, which will result in more than its 1,300 workers unemployed. The unions have been negotiating with the management to continue its operations, but on the plea of loss, the company is closed for the last one month. The company is moving to close down the unit permanently. The intervention by the state government has not been successful.

During the last few months similar things are happening with job loss for thousands of workers. The Tata Consultancy Services(TCS) is on the process of retrenching about 70,000 of its high tech officials, though the company denies the same, stating that the number is much less and it is a regular feature. The retrenchment is done so that the employees with some years of service and who are getting higher pay can be retrenched and new employees recruited to whom low salary can be given, thus reducing the salary expenditure.

Against this new attack, the IT professionals demonstrated in Delhi two days back. They have also decided to form trade union to defend their rights and jobs.

It is reported in the press that about 25,000 IT professionals may be retrenched from Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), one of the leading IT company in the country. The move is mainly to reduce the expenditure on salary payment. The professionals who are going to be fired will be having many years of service and will have to be paid higher. If they are retrenched and new persons are recruited, according to an estimate, about Rs. 80,000 crore can be profited by the company.

Now the time has arrived for the IT professionals also to unionize to fight for their job.
