International Women’s Day is observed on 8th March all over the world. The day was started being observed since 1911, one hundred and four years back.
Women are being discriminated in all spheres, whether at home, workspot, in wages, social status and what not. In addition they are sexually assaulted, molested and harassed. In the capitalist system, women is treated as a commodity. They do not have adequate representation in Parliament, legislatures and even at local level. The trade unions are also having only very few women leaders at decision making bodies. There is complete gender discrimination.
It is for the working class to take more interest in changing this unhappy situation. BSNL Employees Union is committed for gender equality, but not much has been done. In the BSNL, where about 25% of the workers are women, there is a very good scope to bring women leaders at all levels of the organisation. Let the International Women’s Day be observed with wide publicity and with firm decisions to ensure that women workers get justice – in the union activities also.
The Theme for the IWD for this year is “Inspiring Change”. Let us start the change for the better! The Central Executive Committee of BSNLEU has called upon the Circle/SSAs/Branches to observe the day in a befitting manner. Implement it effectively.
