To day, 7th December 2013, I along with my wife went to see the Hazrat Nizamud-Din’s Dargah, which is situated near the Nizamuddin Railway Station. He lived from 1236 to 1325. He was a Sufi and both Sultans Alaud-din Khalji (1296-1316)and Muhammad Tuglak (1325-51) greatly revered him. The way is through narrow lanes, but once you reach the Dargah (Tomb), it is calm and quiet. The tomb is covered with flowers and chaadar. Many devotees were putting chaadar and also plates of roses. Nearby there are many graves, including that of Jahanara, Sha Jahan’s daughter, Amir Khusraw and others.
A few distance away is the simple tomb of Mirza Ghalib (27.12.1797 – 15.2.1869), the great Ghazal poet. He lived during the last period of the Mughal Empire and has seen living during the I War of Independence or the Sepoy’s Mutiny as the British called it.
While there were hundreds of visitors to the Nizamuddin’s tomb or Dargah, there was only another single person when we visited.
I am happy, I could visit both today. During my 22 years stay in Delhi, I had missed them. Delhi is a city of so many empires and there are historical remnants every where.
