King Fisher and Jet Airlines employees salary delayed.

It seems that following the financial difficulty of Air-India and delay in payment of salary to staff, the private companies are taking advantage of the same and delaying salary to their employees also. The salary of December is yet to be paid to King Fisher staff. For the Jet employees, the salary for January has not paid so far. Both are pleading of lack of funds. To what extent it is true. The companies had got a lot of profit earlier and expanded their services with the full hearted support of the staff. Now, even if we agree that there was some financial difficulty, how the salary can de denied/delayed when the management is fully responsible for the same.

My full support is to the staff of both these companies who are suffering due to the unethical decisions  of the private companies.

All the Unions/Associations of the Non-Executives in BSNL have  given the strike notice to CMD. A joint statement is also issued. The next 15 days will see maximum propaganda by the working class to make the strike an unprecedented success. It is the duty of each and every worker to ensure that the strike is made 100% success. The issues raised in the notice are of utmost important to the employees and workers including the minimum wage and labour laws.

Let us advance to a successful strike.

The 44th Indian Labour Conference on 14th February 2012

The 44th Indian Labour Conference will be held tomorrow, 14th February at New Delhi. Representatives of the Government, employees and employers will participate in the Conference and discuss and take decisions on the important labour issues. The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is expected to inaugurate the ILC and Shri Mallikarjun Kharge, Minister of Labour and Employment will preside. Comrades A.K.Padmanabhan, President, Tapan Sen, General Secretary, Dev Roy and Hemalatha, Secretaries will be participating from the CITU.

The meeting is very important since the working class is going on an unprecedented united strike on 28th February on the important demands of the workers. All the Central Trade Unions have given strike notice today. The issues of contract workers as also the anti-workers bills/acts of the government will  be in the discussions. There is a big agenda, including the Minimum wage, the criteria for fixing the minimum wages, Amendment to the labour rules etc. The employers are expected to defend their anti-worker positions. Anyway this ILC will be an important Conference.

Nostalgia for the old school

I had the good opportunity today, 12th February, to visit my old school, where I started learning from the 1st class. It is Kara Lower Primary School, in Kannur District. The old students, present students, teachers and the people of the area were celebrating the 116th anniversary of the school. I had studied in this LP school for five years from 1943 onwards. My brothers and sisters, their children and the grand children have all studied first here only.

The school was founded in 1896. It was up to V class . Even after 116 years it is still a Lower Primary School up to IV Class( The state government had decided that the Lower Primary will be up to IV class only). While many schools which came later to High School and Colleges, this  school continued as it is.

The celebration meeting was presided over by Shri  Sajith Master and inaugurated by Shri Purushothaman, an old student and Local Committee Secretary of the CPI(M). A good number of old teachers and students were present. The teachers, former and present were honoured. I was the Chief Guest. I spoke a few minutes on  my school life etc. Com.Karayi Sreedharan, one of our senior leader of BSNLEU and at present AIBDPA and also former Local Secretary of the area was one of the organisers and was present there. It was a happy meeting. In fact it was his pressure due to which I decided to attend the meeting even by cancelling attending the Circle Conference of the BSNL CCWF of W.Bengal Circle, of course after consulting the General Secretary Comrade Tapas Ghosh.

It was a pleasant occasion meeting the old friends and class mates and exchanging news and views and remembering the past. Thanks for the organisers.

Restaurant in Post Office.

I am at calicut in Kerala for the last two days. Today along with my wife, I went to shopping in the town and afterwards went to Vasantha Bhawan restaurant for coffee. When I was sitting there enjoying coffee, my mind went back several years. Yes, the place was not a restaurant at that time, but was the main Post Office in the city. Many of the meetings of the NFPTE meetings were held there and important decisions taken.

It is good that a new Head Post Office building has been constructed  later along with Recreation Club facilities also in the centre of the town. The P&T ( or rather Postal and BSNL) co-operative Credit Society is also functioning there. Even now that Head Post Office is the centre for many meetings of the Postal and BSNL Unions.

Still when the memory goes back and a nostalgia arises for the old post office, where I was sipping coffee. It also came to my mind that how many royal palaces have  been converted to five-star hotels, not only in Rajasthan, but all over India?

Move to split INTUC

It seems that the Congress / UPA government is in a move to split the INTUC. A statement has come in the newspapers by one Mr. Choudhary,  that Dr. Sanjeeva Reddy, been removed from the post of President of INTUC and that  the former has been elected in his place. It is also stated that this is being done in view of the 28th February Strike and the pivotal role of Sanjeeva Reddy in giving call for the strike which is against the UPA government.

The Congress, as the ruling party, has always been against the struggles of the working class. During the independence struggle, till 1947, there was only one central trade union in the country viz. All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), the leaders of which included Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, V.V.Giri and other Congress leaders along with Comrades S.A.Dange, B.T.Ranadive and other communist leaders. But on the eve of the Independence, the Congress split AITUC and formed its own TU, the INTUC to support the government.

Is this going to be repeated because Dr. Sanjeeva Reddy has stood with the main stream of the working class? Till further details are known, nothing could be forecasted. However, it is clear that any such move of disruption of trade union unity should be strongly opposed and defeated.

Congratulations to SNEA

My Hearty Congratulations to Comrade G.L.Jogi, General Secretary, SNEA and other leaders and members of SNEA for fulfilling their dreams of having their own building at New Delhi. The building, SNEA Bhawan was inaugurated today in the presence of veteran trade union leaders and members of SNEA.

I could not attend due to myself being in Kerala to attend  some urgent personal matters. My Best Wishes once again!

CPI(M) Kerala State Conference a great success.

CPI(M), party politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan was re-elected unanimously as its Kerala unit secretary by the state conference. Vijayan’s name to the key party post was proposed by Achuthanandan himself. Delegates who attended the meet also unanimously elected an 84-member state committee, five-member control commission and delegates for the party congress to be held in Kozhikode in April, Vijayan and other leaders told reporters here after the meet ended today. An astute politician and skilled organiser, Vijayan came up in politics as a student and youth activist. Born on March 21, 1944 in the Leftist hotbed Pinarayi in Kannur district, Vijayan has been in the forefront of struggles waged by the party in the last few decades. A man of few words, he was elected to the state assembly five times and proved a hard-hitting speaker and gifted debator when his services were required by the party within and outside the legislature. He resigned from the ministry to take up the party assingment as insisted by one-time mentor Achuthanandan in 1998.Later, addressing a press meet at the conclusion of the delegates’ session, Vijayan said pulling down the Oommen Chandy headed UDF ministry through undemocratic means is not on CPI(M)’s agenda in Kerala, but that the party would step up its campaign against the government’s wrong policies. “We are not going to indulge in parliamentary intrigues to topple the ministry. We had made it quite clear after the assembly elections last year and there is no change in that stand,” he said. He termed as “totally absurd” reports in a section of the media that certain portions in the organizational review report presented to the conference had been ‘frozen’ at the intervention of the politburo on a complaint from senior leader V S Achuthanandan. “The report has been unanimously adopted by the conference. There could be some changes here and there and minor additions and deletions. But no change has been effected to its general direction or dilution of the spirit of the content,” he said. The conference also underscored the need to strengthen the Left unity and extend the party’s support base. (Courtsey: Ganashakti)

28th February Strike notice will be given on 13th February.

Most probably, all the central trade unions also may be giving the notice on the same day. Full preparations for the strike are going everywhere in the country.  BSNL Unions conventions are being held at Cochin (14th),Hyderabad (15th) and Chennai (16th) and at  other places.

Joint Venture in Defence production?

It is reported that the government has decided to have joint venture in Defence production including foreign companies by the Defence PSUs.. The government claims that through the joint venture country will be getting upgraded technology and production. The details are yet to be known.

With the present available information, it seems that this is also part pf the neo-liberalisation policy and may not be in the interest of the nation considering the security concerns and other connected matters. If so, it has to be opposed and defeated.
