Load Shedding in Kerala under the UDF

Load-shedding from today has been ordered by the Kerala Electricity Board from today, 2nd April. It was only expected as the UDF government did not take sufficient care about the systematic arrangement of electric supply. During the entire five years of LDF government, there was no power cut at all, due to its continuous and sustained efforts to ensure electricity supply to the people.

From today onwards, there will be load shedding for half an hour every day between 1830 and 2230 hours. The government failed utterly in getting additional supply from the central pool also.

The Summer rain

It was real summer rain.

I am now at Calicut.  After visiting the Exhibition in connection with the CPI(M) Party Congress  and chatting with the comrades there, I went to Arya Bhawan restaurant and had snacks instead of dinner. When I came out of the restaurant,  all of a sudden a  dust wind  started followed with very heavy rain.I stood in the veranda of a shop to avoid getting wet. It was heavy rain and all searched for some place to stand without being drenched.

The rain continued for about half an hour. The streets were all full of the rain water. All those people who have come to shopping and enjoying the Sunday got completely drenched. But all were happy that at least the rain has come.Every year one or two such rains will be there in summer.

I was also happy although I got completely wet and  had to wait a long time to get a bus to my residence.

Summer rain is a consolation to reduce the heat at the time of examinations.

1% private share holder sues Coal India Ltd.- threat of disinvestment

CITU has issued the following statement in connection with the legal action by a foreign private share holder against the PSU, Coal india Limited:

New Delhi, March 31:  Recent development In Coal India Ltd., (CIL) has vindicated CITU’s strong opposition to the hollowness and  fallacy of the claims of the Govt. of India, that the disinvestments upto 49% is of no consequence as the Govt. will still have majority shares. CIL is one of the highest profit earning Maharatna PSUs in the country and the Govt. still has 90% of its shares.  But, a hedge fund operator from a foreign soil who has obtained 1% shares in CIL, is now threatening  legal action against CIL management for “working against the interest of CIL”.  These threats are aimed at the status of CIL as a PSU with demands such as  coal should be sold by CIL, only at international prices and not at the lower rates now being sold to the Indian Industries.  In a clear case of tail trying to move the head, Govt’s suicidal policy of disinvestment has allowed  1% share holder to intimidate one of the biggest PSUs in the country and the Govt. is being forced to respond to their threats not with standing the fact that coal being natural resource is owned by the people of this country and Govt. is only the trustee. CITU wonders if  1% share holder can intimidate the Govt, what will be the fate of our PSUs, with 49% shares disinvested to Indian or foreign investors? Envisaging such adverse impact of creeping privatization on PSUs,  CITU has been consistently demanding that the Govt. of India should put an end to its disinvestment policy for PSUs which is against the interests of the country.  This demand was one of the issues, on which all Central Trade Unions and National Federations of Employees and Workers organized a country wide strike on 28th February 2012. Ignoring this demand Govt. has decided in the budget  to go ahead with its policy of disinvestment with an additional target of Rs.40,000 crores. CITU demands that Govt. must immediately stop disinvestment of PSUs  to safeguard the interests of the country.

March 31st is a very important day

31st March is important in many ways. Firstly, it is the date on which the Banks finalize the accounts. Government and many private and public organisations also finalize the accounts on the same date. The budget of the next year is to be approved by the Parliament before the start of the next financial year ie. April to March.

As far as Postal Department is concerned, this is the day on which the first Post Office in India was opened in Calcutta in 1774.  The postal services was only for the government earlier. It was from 1774 onwards that it was opened for the public, though limitedly.

There will many important events connected with 31st March. It is, anyway, an important date.

April 1st – Delhi completes hundred years as capital of the country.

The capital of India was shifted from Calcutta to Delhi one hundred years back on this day, 1st April 1912. Till that time the Britishers were functioning at Calcutta as their headquarters. Of course during summer, they used to shift the HQ to Shimla to avoid the heat. But taking all facts in to consideration, including the security as well as the location, the HQ was shifted and Delhi became the capital. It is stated theat seven empires including that of Moghuls have ruled the country with Delhi as capital. New Delhi was constructed by the British along with the present Rashtrapathi Bhawan, North and South Blocks, Connaught Place etc.

The shift was a loss to Calcutta, but a gain for Delhi.
