Organise International Workers’ Day on 3rd October 2014

The International Workers’ Day is being observed on 3rd October for the last few years as per call of the World Federation of Trade unions (WFTU). It was on this day that the WFTU was formed in 1945. Every year the WFTU allots a theme / slogan for the year’s International Day. Last year the theme was Water, Housing, Medicine and Education.
This year the theme is ‘unemployment’. There are millions of youngsters in the world who do not have jobs. In India, the number has reached many crores. It is increasing every year. The neo-liberal policies have resulted in reduction of jobs and increase of unemployment.Though lip-service is done by the Government, no practical action is taken to provide jobs for all. To a certain extent, this is the situation in the capitalist countries also.

This International Day of Workers will focus on the issue of unemployment. In India the Day is being observed jointly by the Left trade Unions like CITU, AITUC etc. The Independent Federations in the various sectors as also the central and State government employees are also joining. The AIBDPA, pensioners’ organisation of the DOT-BSNL and also the Casual and Contract workers in BSNL are joining in the observation of the Day.All the units of BSNLEU, AIBDPA and BSNLCCWF are requested to join the united programme of the trade unions on 3rd October. If the programme is organised on another day due to the festival on that day, we should also join the same.

In Delhi, CITU, AITUC and other Left trade Unions along with Independent Federations will observe International workers day on 4th October.A procession will start at 1300 hours from AITUC office on Deena Dayal Upadhyaya Road and hold the meeting at CITU Office.

Make all arrangements for the successful observance of the day.

‘Government has no Business to be in Business’ – Modi

Prime Minister Modi has stated at Washington at the end of his US tour that the “Government has no business to be in business”.

It is not a new slogan. The Bajpai Government earlier used the same slogan in a different way stating that ” Business is not the business of the government.” And then government started privatising PSUs one after another like BALCO, ITC Hotels and so on.

But the original slogan have another owner. It is the World Bank, which mooted the slogan. Both NDA and UPA governments were only repeating what the World Bank has told.

The PSUs have always been a thorn in the eyes of the private sector and the world financial institutions, since they put barriers in the maximisation of profits by the MNCs and big business. The Modi Government wants to remove this barrier by privatising the PSUs. Since the NDA government has got brutal majority, it feels that it can do this easily.

But the democratic forces will not allow such a thing to happen. The Trade unions in the country will also not allow such demolition of PSUs. The workers have to be vigilant and prepared for united struggles to save the PSUs.

we oppose private industry / business persons as CMD/CEO of PSUs.

It is reported in the press that the government is proposing to appoint CEO/CMD from private persons in Coal India Limited which is a PSU. This is strongly to be opposed. It seems that this is the first time that such a proposal is being mooted.

Public Sector has its own method of working, work culture, labour relations and most important of all, a commitment to the people and the nation. Private companies have none of these, except the target of maximising the profit. This will not suit the PSU culture. The present move is part of a greater plot of ruining the PSUs.

As such, we strongly oppose the proposal and demand that private CM/CEO should not be brought in PSUs.

2nd October – Gandhi Jayanti

Mohan Das Karamchand Gandhi, who became the Father of the Nation, was born on 2nd October 1869. He was shot dead by a Hindu fanatic on 30th January 1948. His life and work were a struggle for truth, a struggle for the Independence of the country. He moved the entire people of this country against the mighty British Empire and compelled them to quit and go.

It is in his memory that Gandhi Jayanti is observed through out the country on 2nd October, his birth day.

All of us can get determination and courage to fight against injustice from the life and struggles organised by Gandhiji.

50,000 toilets in schools will constructed by PSUs

Coal India limited and ONGC together will be constructing about 5,000 toilets in the schools during the next few years. As per the reports, the expenses will be met from their social security funds.

Both UPA and NDA governments took action to disinvest, dismantle and privatise the PSUs. But it is the same PSUs which had helped the government in all crises. Whenever there is any financial difficulty, the government took the cash balance of the PSUs. How many times this process has been repeated? But at the same time, the attack on PSUs continues. All know that it was the PSU banks which helped the government to minimise the damage of the 2008 recession in India. The PSUs are the hens laying the golden eggs. Don’t kill them for immediate benefit.

Senior Citizens day 2014 – October 1

Today is World Senior Citizens’ Day. As per the call of the United Nations General Assembly, 1 October is being organised as World Senior Citizens’ Day from 1991.
Those who have completed 60 years of age are usually called senior citizens. They are also treated as old people. They had during their past served the nation, worked tirelessly, brought children, educated them and showed them a way for future. Now in their old age they require light work, if they can do, and rest. They require love and help from others. They become weak gradually and require health care and expert treatment.

But are they getting all the above ? It is doubtful. Of course, many senior citizens live happily with their families. But a large number of senior citizens face extreme difficulties, pain, and harassment from their own families. They are not looked after and sometimes abandoned altogether. Their lives become hell.

In many countries, the children and the old people are treated as the treasure of the society. All benefits are given to them first. Their health is taken care of. Even the education that they could not get earlier in their life is provided. Socialist Cuba is in front of all these countries.

India has also many rules in this respect. But it is seldom implemented.

On this World Senior Citizens Day let us continue our efforts to help and ensure the self respect, health and future life of the Senior Citizen.

Don’t get involved in attack in Iraq – CPI(M)

New Delhi, Sep 30 : CPI(M) today asked the government not to succumb to American “pressures” to send troops to join the US-led coalition to fight the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
“The Government of India must, under no circumstances, fall prey to these machinations. It must never join any unilateral US initiative of this sort, no matter how strongly such an initiative is portrayed as defending ‘humanity’ against ‘the forces of barbarism’,” the party Politburo said in a statement.
It said the Obama administration “has been putting great pressure on India of late to join a US-led coalition against the ISIS. It may take advantage of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s presence in New York at the moment to make India fall in line with its plans.”
“Any international response to the ISIS must have the sanction of the United Nations, without which it carries no legitimacy,” it said.
The CPI(M) warns the government that “it must never deviate from this basic position which India has always upheld and which commands a consensus in the country.”

How to strengthen BSNL, How to give Better Service?

The Forum and all the unions/Associations have been on the task of strengthening BSNL as also for giving a better service to the customers. But except some slight improvement, the situation continues. The only satisfaction is that the services have not gone down further.
Today is the 14th Birth Anniversary of the BSNL. It is our duty to ensure improvement both in expansion and service to the people. Only if all the employees, management and the government join together, the task can be completed successfully.
