NEW DELHI: Over 12,100 establishments have been found defaulting on their PF contribution till December this fiscal and action is being initiated against them, Parliament was informed today.

Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat, West Bengal, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh are among the states with highest number of such instances in the last four years up to December 2014-15.

“Instances of non-deposit of contribution by some establishments, covered under Employees’ Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions have come to the notice of EPFO as they have violated the provisions of the Act and schemes framed thereunder,” Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya said in a written reply to Lok Sabha.(Courtesy : TOI)

BSNL is one  of these firms. The EPF for the contract workers are not being paid in many places by the Contractor/BSNL. This is most shameful for a PSU like BSNL. The BSNL Management should take immediate action to ensure contribution to the EPF.

Hearing that Com.R.K.Kohli, General Secretary NFTBE,  had an accident a few days back, I went to his house at Rohini and met him. During a function near his house, he fell down. Though no fracture was there, he was unable to walk and severe pain was there. According to the advise of Doctor, he is taking complete rest. He told that he is better and may be able to go out by one or two weeks.

We talked about the old times when in the All India Conferences there was  serious discussion on each and every policy decision, about Com. O.P.Gupta etc. We had tea together and myself returned after some time. Wish for his early recovery.

President Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday said women’s empowerment, their dignity and equality should not be made a “distant goal or fond aspiration” but should be bestowed on them as one of their “sacred” rights.

While awarding some select women achievers of the country on the occasion of International Women’s Day at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, Mr. Mukherjee said it was time for a “collective introspection” for changing those “societal perceptions” and attitudes that pose a hurdle in the development of women in the society and also vis-a-vis their status in country’s economy.

“I take this opportunity to convey my heartfelt appreciation of the countless women who are the silent backbone of our economy… as professionals they are second to none in their achievements and their services as doctors and nurses, as space and nuclear scientists and in government offices and politics are invaluable in forging a path of progress and growth for our people.

“Therefore, it is only appropriate that we should remind ourselves that the empowerment of women and their equality, liberty and dignity are not a distant goal or fond aspiration of the women of our country. It is one of their sacred rights. It is not a privilege that they should seek,” the President said.

“There are, nevertheless, enduring societal perceptions and attitudes which inhibit the pace of improvement in the condition and position of Indian women in our society and economy. These call for urgent individual as well as collective introspection. We must identify these weaknesses and their root cause,” he said.(Coutesey: Hindu)

“FOUNDERS OF THE CPI(M)” – Book by Com. N.Ramakrishnan

1st-pbI was reading the book ” Founders of the CPI(M)”, written by Com.N.Ramakrishnan, for the last few days and completed it today. The book is about the first nine PB Members of CPI(M), who were elected in the VII Party Congress held at Kolkata on 31st October – 7th November 1964, after the split with the united CPI. They are Comrades P.Sundarayya,  A.K.Gopalan, EMS Namboodiripad, B.T.Ranadive, M.Basavapunnaiah, Harkishan Singh Surjit, P.Ramamurti, Jyoti Basu and Promode Dasgupta. None of them are alive now. Com. Jyoti Basu passed away in 17-01-2010, the last to pass away.

The 20th century was the battlefield of these titans in the political arena. Each one of them were inspired by the Independence Movement, most of them came through Congress, Congress Socialist Party to the Communist movement. Every one of these leaders have been arrested several times, undergone years of imprisonment and were in underground also. These are the leaders who gave the lead to the walk-out from the National Council  meeting of the undivided CPI meeting in 1964 protesting against the reformist policy of the leadership  and later formed the CPI(M).

Organising the party was almost an impossible task facing the attack of the British Government and later Congress Government. At each and every moment the CPI(M) was attacked. It is specially to be noted that Com. A.K.Gopalan, who was a leader of the freedom movement and who was not released from the the jail when India got Independence had to raise the Indian National flag in the jail. There was not much difference between British and Congress government in attacking the CPI(M).

Three of the leaders, Coms. P.Sundarayya, EMS and Surjeet were General Secretaries of the CPI(M) during various periods. Two were Chief Ministers, EMS and Jyoti Basu. They were all great leaders and writers. The books and articles of Com. EMS have been published in to 100 volumes after his death. The Sundarayya Memorial Library has thousands of books  from the collection of Com. Sundarayya and  Com. Basavapunnaiah. All of the leaders have organised mass organisations/ trade unions and have been leading them.

Their entire life has been in the service of the people. They have sacrificed every thing for the country and the toiling masses. They are the great leaders of the Communist movement.

While paying homage and saluting these founders of the CPI(M), I congratulate Com. N.Ramakrishnan, who has written the book, which is inspiring and educative. It is a book which has to be read.

8th March – International Women’s Day

Tags

, ,

8th March is being celebrated as International Women’s Day since 1911. It is being observed in most of the countries.

Women have been discriminated and are being denied equal opportunity and equal justice in the  society. They are discriminated in jobs, wages,  society, home, schools, worship places – every where. Thousands of years of male dominance has relegated the women to a second position. This still continues and some times is increased.

All the religions have given prominence to men at the cost of women. The fundamentalists of each and every religion are targeting women. Attacks are on women world wide. They are molested, harassed, raped and killed. The recent statement of a convict in the Nirbhaya case, clearly shows the mindset of many in the society.

There have been many women Presidents and Prime Ministers in several countries, including India. But the condition of women has not improved as required. The mindset of the society has to be changed.

It is not a small fight. It is a very very long fight. It is not  the fight of women only, it is a fight by the men and women. The progressive forces and the working class have a great responsibility in the matter.

The society can not move forward with one leg, the women, tied to a post. Both legs have to move equally, freely  and in cohesion. In the socialist society, there will be no discrimination between men and women. They will have equal rights and equal responsibility.

Let us all pledge to day, to make all out efforts to bring gender equality, equality for men and women.
