Unpardonable murder of trees for Modi Rally

It is reported in ‘Hindu’ today that about 400 to 500 trees including fruit bearing ones have been cut and more than 1,000 two year plants of several species up rooted at the new campus of BP Mandal University in Patna to make space for the election rally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 1 November 2015.
This is atrocious and is to be condemned. This is completely unacceptable. Prime Minister who speaks for Swatch Bharat and who have the responsibility to make for a better environment should take strict action against the persons responsible for this carnage of trees. Otherwise, it will be presumed that this murder of trees is with his permission.
In that case, the entire guilt falls on the shoulders of the PM.

‘Patricia’ ravages Mexico

The ferocious storm ‘Patricia’ has reached Mexico ravaging the country with a speed of more than 165 km and the sea waves reaching more than 20 metres high. Lakhs of people of three provinces have been already got vacated to safety.
Why so many storms, Sunamis etc.are  happening  in quick succession during the last one or two decades? But the consolation is that the scientists and weather analysts are mostly able to forecast such storms, so that safety measures like evacuation can be arranged to save valuable lives.

Anomalies, 78.2% IDA Pension fixation should be settled before next Wage Revision in BSNL

Two most important issues need be settled urgently, before next wage revision in BSNL w.e.f. 01-01-2017. One is the long pending anomaly of wage rrevision in 2000, when many seniors got less than their jumiors. They should be granted pay equal to their juniors, with retrospective effect.
Second is the 78.2% IDA Pension fixation to post- 2007  and pre- 2007 pensioners.
The employees’ unions and Pensioners’ unions have to concentrate on these two issue in the coming days. The injustice should be undone.

Telegraphs started 164 years back, now no more!

Telegraphs

It was a great invention – The Telegraphs, which sends message in codes to any part of the world. Within few years after the invention, telegraphs came in to India in 1851. The first telegraph system in India was introduced on 24rd October between Calcutta and Diamond Harbour. It was expanded all over India by 1854.

The telegraphs flourished in a big way. It was the fastest communication for many years, till the telephones came in the 20th century. Still telegraphs was very valuable as as a record, document etc. as also reaching to the villages through the Post Offices.

However, it could not survive in the 21st century, where the fastest and easy communications came through the mobile, internet etc. The Unions could delay the extinction for some time, but were unable to stop it.

The Telegraphs was given a farewell on  15th of July 2013 by the people of India. But it was a real magnificent farewell. Hundreds of people stood in queue to send their last telegram in front of the telegraph offices.

Telegrams have become a memory in India. But all of us cherish the long experience with telegraphs and telegrams!

How NFPTE and Affiliate Unions functioned ?

,

I am going through the early documents of the NFPTE and affiliated Unions for preparing some articles. The documents reveal a highly developed sense of democratic functioning, open debate and also thoroughness in the work.

NFPTE and most of the affiliated unions were functioning in a rented building at 9,Pusa Road, New Delhi -5. (Although the particular building has been demolished and new building constructed in its place, you can see old similar buildings in the nearby plots). The P.III Union functioned at 9A/52, Western Extension Area, Karol Bagh, New Delhi – 5, which is nearby. The Secretary General and General Secretaries used to meet almost every day.

NFPTE had its journal “P and T Labour” and the affiliated unions their own journals. In the journals, the accounts of the union (unaudited) are published every month.

The meetings of the Central Working Committee are reported in detail with the decisions, the discussions with the points made by the speakers etc. so that the reader will be able to understand the essence of it. The constitutional provisions are strictly adhered to. Even the name of all the executive committee members are printed.

The Common issues are taken by the Federation, while the sectional issues are  taken by the concerned unions. The Parliament discussion on P and T issues are reported in details with the speakers’ name and what they said.

It is very interesting to go through these records which will  inspire the workers for their future activities. Red Salute to these great leaders who built up the P and T movement!

How T.III Union purchased a Typewriter in 1955?

,

Immediately after the formation of the National Federation of P and T Employees on 24th November 1954, an office was taken at 9, Pusa Road, New Delhi – 5 for the Federation and the affiliated unions. T.III Union also functioned there. It had an old type writer and wanted to purchase a new one. Donation @ Re. 1/- was appealed by Com. B.K.Mukherjee, President of the Union. The Typewriter was purchased first and then after collection, the amount of about Rs.800.00 was paid.

It was through such hardships and difficulties that NFPTE and the affiliated unions were built up.
