Majority of the 38,000 staff of Door Darshan and All India Radio went on a 48 hours strike on 23rd November 2010 protesting against the role of  CEO B.S.Lalli in the CWG broadcast fiasco. They are also protesting against the Prasar Bharati Act.

Many of the Broadcasting stations did not work. Even the few broadcasting is being done through contract workers and skelton staff.

AIIEA – 80% membership, still not recognised !

All India Insurance Employees Association (AIIEA) which is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee year (60 years), is the largest union in LIC with around 80% membership. In 2009, out of the new recruits, 87% joined AIIEA. But AIIEA is neither recognised nor accepted as the representative union of LIC workers. This is a clear denial of the democratic right of the workers to choose the union to represent them.

AIIEA organised a massive Post Card Campaign in December 2009 – January 2010 ( 2 months) protesting against the LIC (Amendment) Bill 2009, introduced in the Parliament to destabilise LIC and to help the MNCs and private insurance companies. An astounding 17,45,984 ( Seventeen lakhs forty-five thousand and nine hundred eighty-four ) post cards signed by Policy Holders were sent to the Prime Minister! We should congratulate the organisational capability and commitmentment of the AIIEA.

MOIL disinvestment

Manganese Ore India Limited (MOIL) is going to be disinvested by November 2010 for the second time. 20% shares are proposed to be sold. Out of 3.38 crore shares 2% will be reserved for the employees.  But as in Coal India Limited, the chances are that the workers may boycot share purchasing.

1st December, the day on which BSNL employees start their 3 days strike against disinvesment will be organised by PSU Workers as Anti-Disinvestment Day.

ONGC, IOC, NTPC, SAIL granted ‘Maharatna’

17 Wednesday Nov 2010

Three major PSUs, Oil & Natural Gas Corporation(ONGC), Indian Oil Corporation (IOC)   and NTPC are formally granted Maharatna Status which enables them to invest in projects worth  up to Rs. 5,000 crore. As ‘Navaratna’ companies their power was only up to Rs.1000 crore. Maharatna status provides greater autonomy and operational flexibility. The conditions for grant of the status are minimum average turnover of Rs. 25,000 crore, net profit of Rs. 5,000 crore for the past continuous three years. It is decided to grant Maharatna status to Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) also.

Though BSNL had fulfilled almost all the conditions and is one of the biggest companies, not even Navaratna status was not conferred to it. Ram Vilas Paswan, Communications Minster, when he inaugurated BSNL in October 2000, had assured that it will be granted Maharatna. At that time the name of Maharatna itself was new, the status Navaratna only existing. BSNL is now granted Miniratna status, which is nothing but an insult to such a mega company.

Contract workers

The All India Co-ordination Committee of Public Sector Trade Unions have called upon all unions connected with it to observe “Contract Workers Demands Day” on 21st December 2010 by organising joint demonstrations and other mobilisation. BSNL Casual & Contract Workers Federation is also expected to take similar decision. A mighty movement of the Contract Workers is in the offing. BSNLC&CWF has already approached MPs and Central TU leaders to raise the issue in the Parliament and outside.
