BSNL – MTNL Spectrum should be retained

02 Friday Nov 2012

The proposal of the government to take away spectrum of more than 2.5 Mhz from the telecom companies and put it for auction for getting more revenue is welcome. But at the same time, the spectrum of more than 2.5Mhz from BSNL and MTNL should be retained with them. There is difference between the public and private companies. While the private companies are providing service for profit and more profits, the public sector is providing services as part of the government’s policy decisions for universal service without much looking in to the profit and loss matter. In this context,it is necessary that the spectrum allotted to BSNL and MTNL earlier should not be cut. It is to be retained with the PSUs.

4-G services - UK

Britain’s first fourth generation (4G) mobile service was launched in 11 cities on Tuesday by the operator EE.

EE, a company formally known as Everything Everywhere, said the 4G service went live in Bristol, Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Sheffield and Southampton, reported Xinhua.

The price is diversified in different plans — 500MB of data would be charged 36 pounds ($58) a month, while more elaborate plans would cost 56 pounds per month with a data allowance of 8GB.

“Today is a landmark day for our company, the UK mobile industry and, most importantly, the country’s business and consumers,” said Olaf Swantee, CEO of EE, in a statement.

Tuesday’s launch is reportedly the first phase of its 4G services. The network will expand by 2,000 square miles every month, both into new cities as well as providing denser coverage in existing areas.

4G technology can deliver internet download speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G which helped bring the internet to mobile phones a few years ago.

EE was granted Britain’s first 4G license in August by Ofcom, the regulator for British communication industries. Its rival companies such as Vodafone and O2 are waiting for a spectrum auction scheduled for early next year to launch their own 4G services in Britain. (Courtsey: Hindu)

Telecom - Teledensity - BSNL

It seems that for the first time, there is a decline in the number of mobile connections in the country. As per the reports in the press, the mobile connections in the country have come down by a few percentage in August 2012. The connections of Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance and other operators have come down. The situation of the BSNL is yet to be known. As soon as the report of the TRAI for August is published, the correct information will be known.

Is the Indian Teledensity saturated or is it  only a temporary phase?

Telecom - ISD

TRAI has recommended to the DOT that in future the ISD facilities should be barred from the pre-paid mobile connections. Citing the misuse of the facility by telemarketers etc. the users of the pre-paid mobile connections are put to unnecessary difficulty, this new condition has been done.

Before providing the pre-paid connections, the subscriber should be asked whether he want ISD facility and only after he agreed for the same, the ISD facility will be provided.

For the existing pre-paid connections, the ISD will be disconnected within 60 days. If the subscriber consent for ISD within sixty days, it will be continued.

Government surrenders to Private telecom companies.

19 Thursday Jul 2012

It is a not a new matter that the government surrenders to the demand of the corporates, even if is against the interests of the country. The latest development in the telecom sector once again confirms this.

The government was in the process of taking action against the private companies who violated the licence conditions by providing 3G services in the circles where they do not have licences. The private companies protested. Now in the National telecom Policy 2012 (NTP 2012), the government has committed itself on the demand of the private telcos.

This surrender can be seen in the case of allotting bench price for 2G licences auction. The recommendations of a higher price is being reduced by the Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) from Rs. 18,000 to Rs. 17,000 or so.

It is all being done in the name of reduced price for the people. But it never reaches the common people. It goes in to the coffers of the corporates only.

BSNL Management suspends new allowances to non-optee officers.

05 Tuesday Jun 2012

BSNL management has issued orders today suspending the new/additional increased allowances to the non-optee ITS officers. It is issued after the executives and non-executives decided to organise struggles for restoration of the allowances/benefits cut and grant of 78.2% etc. The decision to organise massive dharna on 6th June and for going on Indefinite Strike w.e.f. 13th June has un-nerved the management. The Management fully knows that the immediate grant of about 15 allowances to non-optee ITS oficers had irritated the workers.

The Forum and Unions/Associations are very clear on the subject. Whether you cancel or not the allowances given to the non-optee ITS officers, it is your decision. Our demands stand and we will organise struggle if the same are not accepted and implemented.

The workers should not be misguided by the BSNL order. Please organise the Dharna on 6th and the Indefinite Strike with effect from 13th June in a very successful way. Further details will be posted in the union websites.

NTP – 2012 ,Government surrenders to private companies

02 Saturday Jun 2012

A perusal of the available information clearly shows that the government has completely surrendered to the demands of the private telecom companies while finalising the NTP-2012. Whether it is spectrum sharing or allotting spectrum or financing, the policy is on the side of the private telcos. No benefit is shown to the PSU telecoms, BSNL and MTNL. A serious analysis has to be done after the full text of the policy is available.
