Bank employees prepare for strike as IBA denies adequate Wage Revision

Bank Strike, IBA, UFBE

The Public Sector Bank Employees have decided for a series of strike in the new year due to the adamant attitude of the Indian Bank Association in not prepared justified increase in the wages. The IBA is only prepared only to a meagre increase of 11%, while the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBE), the apex body of all the unions in Banks, is demanding 23% increase.  The latest talks also having failed, the UFBE has decided for a series of strike. One of the reason mentioned by the IBA is that due to the NPA ( bad loans), there is dearth of funds. The unions are questioning why the bad loans have not been recovered. It is the responsibility of the Bank managements to recover the loans of thousands of crores of rupees to the corporates and big business. The increase in NPA is not due to the employees, but only due to the managements favouring the corporates and rich.

The UFBE stated that a one day strike will be organised  on 7th January 2015, four days strike from 21 January  and Indefinite Strike from 16th March 2015.

We fully support the justified strike of the Bank Employees.

Coal strike

PTI Report

New Delhi, Dec 17 Employee unions of state-owned CIL and SCCL today threatened to go on a five-day strike beginning January 6 to press for demands including roll-back of the “process of denationalisation of coal sector” and stopping “disinvestment and restructuring” of Coal India.

The coal workers Coal India Singareni Collieries Company (SCCL) will observe five days all India strike with effect from January 6,” four central trade unions –BMS, INTUC, HMS and AITUC–said in a joint statement.

The strike call comes at a time when the country is grappling with coal shortages and as many as 43 thermal power plants are facing significant fuel deficit.

The charter of demands include stopping or withdrawing “process of denationalisation of coal sector” and stopping “disinvestment, restructuring of CIL” (Coal India) among others.

The demands also includes extending National Coal Wage Agreement (NCWA) wages and other benefits to existing and prospective captive coal workers and lifting the ban on general recruitment.

Regularising contract workers engaged in mining jobs in underground as well as open cast mines is another demand. (PTI)

Congress Surrenders – Will Support Insurance Bill

Insurance Bill - Congress U-Turn

All the loud shouts of the Congress against the Insurance Bill which proposes to increase the FDI in Insurance Sector from 26% to 49% have died down. The party has agreed for the passing of the bill in the Rajya Sabha with minor amendments.

Only the Left, JD(U0, SP and Trinamool strongly opposed the bill in the Select Committee. They will oppose in the Parliament also when the Bill is presented.

Once again it has been proved that BJP and Congress are nothing but two sides of the same coin and that on the issue of neoliberalisation and anti-worker policies, they are together.

Disinvestment, Dredging Corporation

The disinvestment process of the Central Government continues without any break. The latest is in the dredging Corporation of India. The Government has decided to disinvest 5% of the shares from the present 78.5% the Centre holds.

Dredging Corporation of India deals with the dredging of the sea ports in India. There is no other PSU dealing with the work. There are sufficient work and the company is a profitable one.

Naturally, the target of the government is to privatise. It is for this purpose that the shares are being sold at the initial stage.

SAIL Disinvestment gets Rs. 1,715 crore; But by LIC and Banks

SAIL Disinvestment

The government may get about Rs. 1,715 crore from the sale of shares of SAIL. But the interesting factor is that the shares are purchased mainly by the LIC, SBI and Public Sector Banks.

This is, nothing but diverting  the funds of  Public Sector companies to purchase shares of another PSU.

5th December 2014, National Protest Day

Crores of workers all over the country is observing today, 5th December 2014, as National Protest Day as per the call of the 11 Central Trade Unions and the independent Federations of Central, State, Public and Private Sector trade unions. The workers are protesting against the anti-worker, anti-people policies of the government and focusing the 10 point demands raised by them, including putting a stop to the spiraling prices of essential commodities, a minimum wage of Rs. 15,000 to contract workers and No to disinvestment and privatisation.

Demonstrations and Rallies will be held in all centers jointly by the trade unions. In Delhi, the rally will be held at Jantar Mantar which will be addressed by central trade union leaders.

This is a warning to the central government which is trying to curtail the hard earned rights of the workers and moving fast to sell the family silver of the people to the corporates and the MNCs.

Let us all participate in the programme and make the National Protest Day a big success!

BSNL, MTNL

There is no relief for BSNL and MTNL from the losses. Ravi Shankar Prasad, Communications Minister, told the Parliament yesterday (3rd December 2014) that BSNL has recorded a loss of Rs. 3,785 crore and MTNL Rs. 1,567 crore till September 2014 in the present financial year. BSNL has been posting loss for the last four years. The case of MTNL is not different.

The Minister also stated that the loss has come due to decline in Revenue and increase in expenditure. But the fact is that the expenditure has only marginally increased, whereas the revenue has gone down drastically from the earlier Rs. 40,000 crore to rs. 26,000 crore, while the expenditure is almost the same at about Rs. 34,000 crore.  The expenditure on wages has been stagnating at about Rs. 14,000 crore for the last three-four years, since  large number of employees, about 10,000 to 15,000 are retiring yearly and no recruitment is taking place.

The Forum of BSNL Unions/Associations of Non-Executives and Executives has given a call for Indefinite Strike from 3rd February 2015 to compel the government and BSNL Management to take initiative and  honour the assurances given at the time of corporatisation, so that BSNL can restore its past glory and provide a better service to the people.

Sale of SAIL Shares

The BJP government has started the sale of shares of PSUs. The present target is Steel Authority of India. it is proposed to sell 5% share immediately, which the government spokes man claims to fetch the government Rs. 1,700 crores.

Stop the selling of the Family Silver! Assets are of the people and the government is only the manager. You can not sell the property of the nation.
