Employees run the closed Greek TV channel

Greek workers, TV closure

It is a welcome news. The staff of the Greek TV channel, which was closed by the government in implementation of austerity measures is still functioning uninterrupted. Though the government had closed, the employees of the company have decided to run the show. The TV channel functions as usual. The employees with more commitment continues working. This is a wonderful news! A report from Athens by news agency AFP is given below. Our congratulations to the workers who stood strong and defended their organisation:

” Athens, Jun 30  Since Greece’s government abruptly pulled the plug on state broadcaster ERT, the sprawling TV complex has turned into a unique experiment in self-rule where staff are working for free but with more passion than ever. Under pressure from its international creditors to cut costs and reform the public sector, Greece’s fragile government shut down ERT and made its 2,700 employees redundant overnight. Many will not return when a slimmed-down version of the broadcaster, which the government agreed to following a public outcry, eventually goes back on air. But in the meantime, employees are going it alone and revelling in the spirit of independence and solidarity filling the studios and busy corridors of ERT’s headquarters in suburban Athens. “There is continuous flow from the entire team here, and an emotional contribution from all,” Fanis Papathanassiou, an ERT foreign affairs journalist and anchorman said. “Not just journalists but producers, editors, assistants, technicians, makeup staff: everyone is here, helping to put this product on the air,” he told AFP. News bulletins are on at an unchanged pace of five times daily and the intervening hours are filled with guest interviews, documentaries and support concerts by a variety of artists. The building is clean — cleaner than before, staff note — the control room is bustling and staff take turns at the entrance to guard what the government calls an unlawful “occupation” of public property. “We call this operational self-management,” Papathanassiou countered. A committee of journalists oversees day-to-day business, from assigning shifts, to preparing newscasts and inviting talk show guests. Rogue ERT broadcasts have continued with support from the European Broadcasting Union despite a digital blackout on ERT’s frequencies by the government. “For the past 18 days, we have shown what public radio and television is all about,” said Chryssa Roumeliotis, a political journalist and news presenter. On June 11, police were dispatched to Mount Hymettus above Athens to silence ERT’s signal after the government enacted an emergency law to shut down the company. The conservative-led government of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said it was the only way to reform ERT after successive efforts had been thwarted by the company’s powerful union.

CPI(M) Oppose Cabinet Decision on price increase of gas

CPI(M), gas, Price Increase, Protest

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) strongly opposes the Cabinet decision to double the price of natural gas, a major input for the production of fertilizers  and power, from 4.2 dollars to 8 dollars per mmbtu. This will have a cascading impact increasing prices and burdening common people, while the main benefit will accrue to a single corporate house.

Reliance, which is virtually blackmailing the country by keeping production of natural gas in the Kg-D6 gas basin below the stated target till the price is increased, will be the main beneficiary. It is estimated that every dollar increase in gas price will increase Reliance’s profits by at least 74 million dollars.

The hike is irrational even in comparison to gas exporting countries where  the price of domestic gas is much lower.  For example, in Gulf countries, the price is only $ 1 per mmbtu, in Egypt $ 2.57, in Nigeria $ 0.11, in Australia $ 5 and in Indonesia around $ 1.

The additional subsidy the Government would have to bear at present prices of fertilizer and gas based power is estimated to be to the extent of 71,250 crore rupees for a five year period. This Government which claims it does not have the funds to ensure a universalized food security system, is prepared to subsidise the profits of a powerful corporate house.

The Government will pass on much of this burden to the common people. Farmers will have to pay more for fertilizers, the price of CNG gas used by public transport in many cities will also be hiked as will electricity tariffs.

Natural gas is a natural resource which belongs to the country. It cannot be arbitrarily handed over for super profits to corporates. The  CPI(M) demands that the decision for the price increase should be kept in abeyance and fully discussed in Parliament.

Banking Service, Dept. of Posts

The Department of Posts have applied to the Reserve bank of India for licence to start full-fledged banking services. The proposal is to start 50 branches in the first year to be increased to 150 branches in five years. Communications Minister Kapil Sibal stated that this proposal will bring banking to the door step of the ordinary man. However, the proposal will have to be approved by the Cabinet.

We feel that the proposal is helpful both to the department of posts as also to the common people. With glorious service of more than one and half century, if the proposal is accepted, the Postal Department will be entering a vast arena which will strengthen it.

Uttarakhand disaster

I salute the Defence force  who have done the most daring rescue operations for the last two weeks since Utharakhand faced the fury of nature and thousands faced near death in the unprecedented floods, landslides and cloudbursts. 20 personnel from Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Indian Air Force(IAF) and National Disaster response Force(NDRF) has become martyrs in the chopper crash while they were rescuing the stranded people. They are national heroes who sacrificed themselves to save others.

The military has  evacuated 1,04,095 stranded people to safety so far according to National Disaster Management Authority. 560 people have died, 463 injured and 344 missing in the floods according to NDMA. (But the media reports indicate that thousands of people have died and seriously injured. Many dead bodies are yet to be found. Thousands are missing according to media reports.) Thousands of houses have collapsed and 154 bridges completely damaged.

Rescue operations are continuing. Now it is time to start the rehabilitation programme for the people of Uttarakhand. The Government, both Central and State, as also institutions, workers and common people have to help in all ways to help in the rehabilitation programme.

Forum decisions

The meeting of the Forum of BSNL Unions/Associations held today, 26 June, has unanimously decided to donate one day pay to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund for helping the people affected by the Uttarakhand disaster. The Forum has requested that the amount be deducted from the salary of the employees. It is expected that the donation will come around Rs. 40 to 50 crore.  The Forum has also suggested that an advance by BSNL be immediately given to Relief Fund, without waiting for the collection.

The Forum meeting congratulated the Military (including Air Force and all defence personnel ) for the continued efforts to save the stranded pilgrims, tourists and local population round the clock, without even considering their own safety. Already some of these army personnel have sacrificed their lives to bring the stranded to safety. The Forum condoled the death of these brave hearts who are the pride of the country. The Forum also mourned the death of more than 1,000  in one of the worst disaster the country has ever seen.

The Forum urged the BSNL Management to make all efforts for the immediate restoration of the BSNL services in the state. Our employees have been doing their best to restore the services, even working 24 hours. The Forum requests the management to make available all required equipment for the restoration. Forum wants the management to immediately take necessary steps to assist the BSNL employees who have been affected due to the disaster both in Uttarakhand and those tourists/ pilgrims from other circles.

The Forum also wants the DOT to financially support the BSNL in its efforts to restore the services in Uttarakhand. This will help BSNL which is in weak financial position.

Ghadar Party celebrates Centenary of formation

Ghadar   Centenary in England

                                                 Joginder Bains

THIS year is the year of Ghadar Party                Centenary and it is being celebrated all over the world.                Ghadar Party was                formalised in America                in                1913 with an aim to fight against racism and inhumane                treatment Indian people                were experiencing in America,                 Canada                and many other countries. They soon realised that such                treatment was due to                British colonisation. They redirected their aim to work                to free India                from                foreign rule that had impoverished Indian people, which                forced them to travel                thousands of miles away from the homeland in search of                livelihood. Ghadar Party                planned to take advantage of the First World War. They                thought the perfect time                for the revolution would be when Britain                and its army would have                been fully involved in the War. They organised a network                all over India and                persuaded the Indian army for mutiny in their individual                barracks in the                support of Ghadar revolution. Unfortunately, the British                government became                aware of the plan in time and the Ghadar Party did not                succeed in its aim.                Ghadar Party activists were arrested in their hundreds,                hanged, imprisoned for life                and their assets were taken into government control                leaving their families to                suffer financial hardship to the level of starvation,                homelessness and so on.

Indian Workers’ Association (GB), Derby                branch celebrated                Ghadar Party Centenary on June 15 at the Indian                Community Centre. 450 people                from Indian Community took part. Jana Natya Manch                travelled from India to                specially perform in the centenary celebrations. Janam                as they are popularly                known, provided a thought provoking presentation on                History of the Ghadar Party                as well as three plays. The first play Yeh Dil Mangey                More Guru Ji – was based                on Gujarat Riots where thousands of Muslims were                massacred by Hindu extremists                just because they were Muslims, same as in 1984 Sikhs in                Delhi were murdered in                the hands of Hindu extremists. The second play Ahinsa                was based on violence                against women. The play illustrated how women are                subjected to violence from                birth to death. The third play Yeh Hum Kyun Sahien                (Enough is enough) was based                on industrial workers. The play illustrated how the                workers are exploited, they                are forced to work on less than a minimum wage,                  work on contracts and are not given permanent                workers status while the                industrialists’ profit margins goes higher and higher.

The programme commenced with patriotic                poems by Kulvinder Johal, and the new UK                members of Janam Roop and Sudesh                also sang two songs. One was based on impoverishing                Indian people under British                Rule “Pagri sambhal Jatta” and the other was based on                female foeticide.

The Ghadar Party Centenary Celebration                programme was conducted by Shangara Singh Gahonia,                general secretary of Indian                Workers’ Association and was chaired by Harbhajan                Singh Johal. The meeting was addressed by Harsev Bains,                national general                secretary IWA GB and by Sharaz Khan, deputy mayor of                Derby City Council. Salute to the brave-hearts

In the proud tradition of the Air Force,  the Brothers in Arms and the IAF family has sent the following condolence message to those  died in the chopper crash while engaged in saving the lives of thousands of people in the Uttarakhand disaster:

” You all have done us proud, for you gave your life in service of your countrymen without discretion of colour, caste, creed or religion – more importantly, in their hour of need. You are now a guiding beacon in our deeds. Your selfless sacrifice in Operation Rahat is monumental and just remembering it would be more than any pilgrimage to us.”
