116 Public Sector enterprises have spent a total of Rs.2,440 crores towards Corporate Social Responsibility programme during 2014-15. This was announced by Anant Geete, Heavy Enterprises and Public Enterprises Minister, in Parliament yesterday, 10th March 2016. This is a good amount spent towards many social activities beneficial to the people. While private companies somehow escape themselves from utilising CSR, Public sector is in the forefront. We congratulate the PSUs for this good effort.

Retrenchment, Siemens

Siemens, which is the German based engineering MNC, has stated that it will slash about 2,500 jobs, which means retrenchment of so much existing workers.

This is an indication of the worldwide reduction of work force. The MNCs in India have been retrenching the workers in a big way and struggles continue against the same.

Rs.41.8 lakh crore tax arrears from corporates

10 Thursday Mar 2016

As per an answer furnished to Parliament by Jayant Sinha, Minister of State Finance, the corporates have to pay an arrear of Rs. 4,18,399 crore tax to the Government as on January 2016.

Govt. wants to impose tax on the workers’ hard earned EPF fund, but takes no action against the big corporates who have cheated the government  Rs.41.18 crores.

Of course, it is the government of the corporates, by the corporates and for the corporates.

Kingfisher owner Vijay Mallya left the country not only cheating the PSU Banks, but also cheated his own employees. While he cheated the PSU Banks thousands of crores of rupees by not repaying the loans, he cheated the workers about more than Rs. 300 crores by not paying their due wages.

The more than 3000 workers have not received their salaries for many months. While the workers do not get their salaries, the owners manage with out losing any single paise and escape to safety. Government looks on without taking any action.

The Communications Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad informed Lok Sabha today, 10th March 2016, that BSNL has a debt of Rs. 7,666 crore and for MTNL a debt of Rs. 13,530 crore. He also mentioned that these debts have arisen due to the purchase of spectrum. BSNL was compelled to pay Rs. 18,500 crore for spectrum, both BWA and 3G Spectrum and MTNL Rs. 11,097 for the same spectrum. BSNL has returned the BWA spectrum, but the amount of more than Rs.6,600 crore is yet to be paid back by government. For purchasing the spectrum the PSUs took the above loans.

What the government should do is to refund the charges for spectrum which has been returned already by BSNL  as also Rs. 1,250 crore from USOF which is pending payment for more than two years.

Private Airlines owe Rs.220.16 crore to AAI

The private airlines including Indigo and Jet owe Rs. 220.16 crore to the Airport Authority of India (AAI) who owns  and runs most of the Airports in the country. This was informed in the Lok Sabha today, 10th March 2016, by Civil Aviation Minister Mahesh Sharma.

This once again shows that the private companies and corporates are draining the revenues of the PSUs in many ways. The case of Mallya, the liquor baron and owner of King Fischer Airlines is well known to all. He took more than Rs.9,000 crore from the banks and have now slipped away to UK to avoid arrest and recovery of the loan.

The fact is that the government is also not taking stringent action against these corporate honchos. Otherwise how could Mallya escape to UK when look out notice is there against him?

And PSUs are criticised for bad loans, loss etc. All these should be exposed to the public.

09 Wednesday Mar 2016

Com.V.A.N.Namboodiri, Advisor and Com.K.G.Jayaraj, General Secretary along with Com. M.B.Rajesh MP have met Shri.Ravi Shankar Prasad, Hon’ble Minister for Communications & IT on 09-03-2016 at his office in Parliament. The delegation brought to his notice the inordinate delay in extending the benfit of 78.2% IDA merger to BSNL pensioners retired before 10-06-2013 and a detailed letter in this regard was handed over to him. The Minister had a patient hearing and stated that his concern is the financial implication involved. However he further stated that he would examine as to what could be done.

The Minister further stated that he is trying his best to revive BSNL and some positive results have started coming by way of an operative profit of Rs.672 crore after incurring heavy losses during the last five years.  The delegation pointed out that the unions are also doing their mite in the revival of BSNL by co-operating fully with the management in marketing BSNL products and the launching of successful “SWAS” is initiated by the Forum of BSNL Unions/ Associations.

In the absence of a categorical assurance from the Minister on the long pending issue of 78.2% IDA merger, the decision for country wide Dharna on 10-03-2016 stands.

Comrades, it is our tradition to fight for the genuine demands. We shall continue our efforts at all levels to resolve the issue. But remember, struggle is our strength and let us mobilize maximum pensioners for the Mass Dharna on 10-03-2016 and definitely we shall win.

Bowing to the strong and widespread anger and opposition against the Budget proposal to tax the EPF withdrawal, the Finance Minister has been compelled to withdraw the anti-worker proposal. Arun Jaitely today announced that the proposal has been withdrawn.

It is also necessary that similar tax on withdrawal of NPS (national Pension Scheme) also should be dropped. About 3.26 crore EPFO subscribers will benefit due to the roll back of the anti-worker proposal. This is victory for the working class.
