What about BSNL? Though declared years back, no MT has been recruited so far.

Com.M.K.Kelu

It is difficult to find a real karma yogi like Comrade M.K.Kelu, who every body, including Com. EMS called ‘Keluettan’ with respect. Entire life of Keluettan was spent for serving the toiling masses and the poor. There may be very less people like him, who had to face brutal police atrocities and murderous beatings. He was unmarried, simple in habits, Party Office was his home and all were his friends and comrades. He was always in front of the struggles. He was courageous to face any situation.

I had been lucky to get his advice and guidance, while I was at Calicut and he was the District Secretary of the CPI(M). I got inspiration from him for my trade union work. At all times when we were in trouble, he was there to save us.

On his 24th death anniversary on 20th May 2015, I pay my respectful Homage to Com. Keluettan!

Red Salute and a bouquet of Red Roses to his memory!

20th May 1498 – The day and visit that was the starting point of imperialism.

20th May 1498, calicut, Vasco da Gama

170px-VascodagamaVasco da Gama’s arrival at Calicut on 20th May 1498 was the starting point which helped the European powers like Portuguese, French and English colonialists to capture India bit by bit. Those who came in the guise of merchants, became the masters within two centuries. India changed in to a colony of the British – its biggest colony by the 18th century.

The sustained struggle for Independence and the favourable situation after the II World War saw India winning Independence of 15th August 1947.

The European powers consider the landing of Vasco da Gama a great day. But for India it was the starting point of losing their freedom.

Central Government should declare Merger of DA and Interim Relief for employees

CG employees, DA Merger, VII CPC

The DA for the Central Government employees has reached 113% of their pay. It has been the practice that, when the DA increases more than 50%, it should be merged with pay so that the workers will not be losing much due to the increase in the cost of living.

Though the VII Central Pay Commission has been appointed, the terms of reference given to CPC do not include DA Merger and hence the CPC is denying to give any recommendation in the matter.

As such, it is incumbent on the government to declare DA merger at least to 100% with out any further delay.

BSNL – Utilise the Works Committees effectively and positively

BSNL, Works Committees

At last,  the BSNL Management has issued strict instructions to hold the Works Committees in all SSAs without fail. Reports  have been called for about whether such committees have already been formed  and whether such meetings  are taking place etc. The Staff Side, National Council has been demanding the holding of the Works Committees for a very long time. The order has come now, though delayed.

It is for the workers and the management to utilise the Works Committee to maximum benefit of the company and for better service. The Committee is intended to discuss the issues connected with the development, expansion of services, efficiency etc. and not for staff issues. For Staff issues, there is the Local Council. The Unions can bring to the notice of the management, the difficulties being experienced including lack of equipment etc. as also where and how to expand the services, provide new connections etc. Management can utilise the opportunity in explaining the developmental plans etc. , how to provide better service and so on.

If both the management and the unions/staff side plan well, discuss and find out solutions for the problems, it will be a great achievement. It is not a blame game. Our maximum efforts should be to find out ways and means for a better service to the customers, expansion of services and more revenue for the company so that BSNL can come of the present financial crisis.

Salutation to the Nurses who kept Aruna Shaunbag alive and nursed for long 42 years!

Aruna Shaunbag

Aruna-Shanbaug

It is nothing short of a miracle or the pinnacle of sacrifice and dedication. Three generations of nurses in KEM Hospital Mumbai kept their almost unconscious colleague Aruna Shaunbag alive for long 42 years , after a brutal  assault on her by a Hospital Ward Boy  on 27th November 1973. She died on 18th May 2015, mourned by not only the staff of KEM Hospital, but the entire humanity.

I salute the nursing community, who have once again shown that they are the real inheritors of the ‘Lady of the Lamp’.
