ILO, Women's Day

United Nations, Mar 8 : It will take at least 70 more years to achieve pay equity between women and men, the ILO said today noting that women earn on average 77 per cent of what men earn.

On the occasion of International Women’s day, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) said a gender pay gap persists, both for women with and without children. In general, women earn on average 77 per cent of what men earn, with the absolute gap widening for higher-earning women. (PTI)

“FOUNDERS OF THE CPI(M)” – Book by Com. N.Ramakrishnan

CPI(M), Founding Members

1st-pbI was reading the book ” Founders of the CPI(M)”, written by Com.N.Ramakrishnan, for the last few days and completed it today. The book is about the first nine PB Members of CPI(M), who were elected in the VII Party Congress held at Kolkata on 31st October – 7th November 1964, after the split with the united CPI. They are Comrades P.Sundarayya,  A.K.Gopalan, EMS Namboodiripad, B.T.Ranadive, M.Basavapunnaiah, Harkishan Singh Surjit, P.Ramamurti, Jyoti Basu and Promode Dasgupta. None of them are alive now. Com. Jyoti Basu passed away in 17-01-2010, the last to pass away.

The 20th century was the battlefield of these titans in the political arena. Each one of them were inspired by the Independence Movement, most of them came through Congress, Congress Socialist Party to the Communist movement. Every one of these leaders have been arrested several times, undergone years of imprisonment and were in underground also. These are the leaders who gave the lead to the walk-out from the National Council  meeting of the undivided CPI meeting in 1964 protesting against the reformist policy of the leadership  and later formed the CPI(M).

Organising the party was almost an impossible task facing the attack of the British Government and later Congress Government. At each and every moment the CPI(M) was attacked. It is specially to be noted that Com. A.K.Gopalan, who was a leader of the freedom movement and who was not released from the the jail when India got Independence had to raise the Indian National flag in the jail. There was not much difference between British and Congress government in attacking the CPI(M).

Three of the leaders, Coms. P.Sundarayya, EMS and Surjeet were General Secretaries of the CPI(M) during various periods. Two were Chief Ministers, EMS and Jyoti Basu. They were all great leaders and writers. The books and articles of Com. EMS have been published in to 100 volumes after his death. The Sundarayya Memorial Library has thousands of books  from the collection of Com. Sundarayya and  Com. Basavapunnaiah. All of the leaders have organised mass organisations/ trade unions and have been leading them.

Their entire life has been in the service of the people. They have sacrificed every thing for the country and the toiling masses. They are the great leaders of the Communist movement.

While paying homage and saluting these founders of the CPI(M), I congratulate Com. N.Ramakrishnan, who has written the book, which is inspiring and educative. It is a book which has to be read.

RAJKOT: Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) has slapped a Rs one-crore ad hoc penalty on Reliance Jio Infocomm for misusing its permission for laying cables in the city.

RMC Commissioner Vijay Nehra issued a notice to the company and asked it to pay a penalty of Rs 1 crore before March 15 failing which legal action including filing of a police complaint against the company would be initiated, Nehra said in an official release issued by the civic body. (News Report)

The same type of cheating is done by many private telecom companies to maximise profit. Officials are not acting against them due to the money/muscle power of the corporates.

8th March – International Women’s Day

8th March, IWD, WFTU

8th March is being celebrated as International Women’s Day since 1911. It is being observed in most of the countries.

Women have been discriminated and are being denied equal opportunity and equal justice in the  society. They are discriminated in jobs, wages,  society, home, schools, worship places – every where. Thousands of years of male dominance has relegated the women to a second position. This still continues and some times is increased.

All the religions have given prominence to men at the cost of women. The fundamentalists of each and every religion are targeting women. Attacks are on women world wide. They are molested, harassed, raped and killed. The recent statement of a convict in the Nirbhaya case, clearly shows the mindset of many in the society.

There have been many women Presidents and Prime Ministers in several countries, including India. But the condition of women has not improved as required. The mindset of the society has to be changed.

It is not a small fight. It is a very very long fight. It is not  the fight of women only, it is a fight by the men and women. The progressive forces and the working class have a great responsibility in the matter.

The society can not move forward with one leg, the women, tied to a post. Both legs have to move equally, freely  and in cohesion. In the socialist society, there will be no discrimination between men and women. They will have equal rights and equal responsibility.

Let us all pledge to day, to make all out efforts to bring gender equality, equality for men and women.

” Workers are not Beggars; They are the salt of the Earth” – Babu Tarapada

Babu Tarapada Mukherjee

I am quoting below three paragraphs from the inspiring Presidential address  of Babu Tarapada Mukherjee delivered at the Lahore Conference of All India (including Burma) Post Office and RMS Union, held from 9th to 11th October 1921. Com. Tarapada, one of the Pioneers of the P and T Trade Union movement, was charge sheeted for the speech and demanded for apology by the DG P and T. Babu Tarapada  defended each and every word of his speech and gave reply. He was dismissed from service, but continued to lead the movement till his death on 20th September 1929.

“Ah! Brothers, workers are not beggars; they are the salt of the earth, they are the only people who produce wealth. Wealth consists of the labour imprinted on material substance; and in the absence of workers where is the labour to come from which is necessary to create wealth? Those who do not work are parasites sucking like vampire the life blood of society and are fattening on the wealth produced by the workers. It is not amusing that the wealth produced by workers should be appropriated and then the producers of wealth be called beggars and a pittance doled out to them, so that they may keep the body and soul together for further production of wealth for the benefit of others.

“Consider, Brothers, what this world would be, were the workers to stop work. Not a grain of cereals would be produced, not a yard of yarn would be spun and woven, not a brick would be laid, not a tenement would be built. Those bloated, over-indulged, finely draped figures, airing their base manners to their own class would have no food to allay hunger, no clothes to cover the body, no home to afford shelter; and they would soon cease to exist to call workers beggars. Brothers, shake off the hypnotic spell, the somnambulism of past life, wake up and be self-conscious, apprise your value at its real worth, do not remain forgetful of the dignity of labour, realise your own strength and March on double quick to the goal, “ Heart within and God overhead”…..

“Take it from me, Brothers, that petitions and memorials and supplications, will count for nothing so long as you do not organise yourselves in a manner to convince the government that you will no longer stand non-sense. This organisation when perfected will be ten times more powerful than the Telegraph Association. But there are difficulties in the way. We have scattered units spread over the breadth and length of this country; and so much stronger must be our efforts to enthuse them with the spirit of Association and secure them to the service of the common cause. The spirit of the Association is already in the air, there is a universal awakening in the Post Office, spirit of unrest has captured the entire Postal Service, everyone is eager to contribute his mite for the furtherance of the common cause. The ground is ready; only some daring spirits are wanted to sow the seed and reap abundant harvest”.

Let us remember those great leaders who fought against the British and the Administration with courage and determination and also sacrificed all for the cause of the workers.
