Swiss Bank Accounts of Black Money

26 Saturday Apr 2014

Finance Minister P.Chidmabaram has stated that some reports are received from Switzerland on the black money stashed, but more information is required and the Swiss government has been again addressed.
This is only to confuse the people. It is well known that much earlier a list was received by the government with accounts, name etc. of those who have stashed black money in Switzerland. But why the government did not publish it? The plea was that as per the agreement with Swiss government, the list can not be published, but the government will take action against the culprits. No action seems to have been taken so far. If people feel that the names are not published along with the amount, because account holders are ruling politicians or corporates whom the government want to save, they can not be criticised.

BSNL, BSNLEU, Kerala

When BSNL is struggling at the All India level, it is making rapid advances in Kerala circle. The profit of that circle is expected to touch Rs.400 crore for the financial year 2013-14. It is worth mentioning that the profit of Kerala circle was Rs.287 crore in 2012-13. BSNL, in Kerala circle is having a market share of 32.32%. In the land line segment it’s market share is 96.11%. In the financial year 2013-14, BSNL in Kerala has added 10,89,385 cellular connections, 78,619 land line connections, 1,68,433 broadband connections, 18,646 Wimax connections and 50,116 CDMA WLL connections. The CHQ of BSNLEU salutes the employees of Kerala circle, as well as the motivating role being played by BSNLEU and all other unions and associations. The question before us is, if Kerala circle can give such a wonderful performance, then why such a performance could not be given by the employees of other circles? Let every one of us think and act. Training Centres and Vacant Quarters can be effectively utilised.

BSNL, Training Institutions

BSNL have two Advanced Training Centres at Ghaziabad and Jabalpur. A report in the newspapers have stated that BSNL is proposing to start a Technical University utilising the infrastructure and facilities. Well and good if the proposal is being implemented. But it may not be as easy as stated.

However, other proposals can be mooted with regard to the 2 advanced training centres and the more than two dozen RTTCs situated in the circles. Since the training process for the BSNL employees are limited as there is not much recruitment, these centres can be utilised by giving on rent to other government / PSU institutions for training purpose. Of course this is being done in a small scale. Some circles are doing it effectively, while others lack. All these institutions have to be maximum utilised as mentioned above.

It is the same with the thousands of vacant BSNL quarters through out the country. These can be rented out for other Govt./PSU institutions, which will at least ensure funds for their maintenance or more.

These issues were discussed in detail today by Com. V.A.N.namboodiri, President BSNLEU, with Shri Neeraj Verma, GM (Trg), who looks after the training institutions. He was also of the opinion for maximum utilisation of these facilities which will bring some extra revenue to BSNL.

Com.V.A.N.Namboodiri, President, BSNLCCWF, had a detailed discussion with Shri A.K.Sanghal,GM(Admn), BSNL on the issues of the contract labour engaged in BSNL and the brutal exploitation of these toiling workers.

In many places, even half of the minimum wage is not paid. EPF and ESI are also not implemented.Orders of the government as well as that of CMD BSNL are completely violated and put in to the dustbin. He demanded that serious and thorough action is to be taken to ensure justice to the contract workers engaged in BSNL.

The GM (Admn) assured that necessary action will be taken to get the orders implemented and minimum wages and social security measures ensured.

BSNL

BSNL is compelled to pay high charges for the satellite links for better connection in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep etc. The charges are to be paid for the Department of Space for these connections. It is now reported that based on the demand of the BSNL and DOT, the Department of Space has agreed to waive the charges for operation of BSNL in these border areas, including the North East.

The government should, not only take the decision, but also implement the same at the earliest which will give some relief to the ailing BSNL.

Today, 23rd April, is World Book Day

World book day

Today, 23rd April, is being celebrated as the World Book Day, as per the call of the UNESCO. The decision was taken by the United Nations body in 1995, in homage to many stalwarts in the field of literature. The first and foremost is that April 23 is both the birth and death anniversary of the great poet William Shakespeare. Along with it is the birth / death anniversary of
Miguel de Cervantes, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and Josep Pla, Maurice Druon, Manuel Mejía Vallejo and Halldór Laxness.

Book reading is an important part of the growth of any individual. Almost all the great leaders of the world were/are great book leaders also. By the books read by a person, he can be understood. There are crores and crores of books written and published, but only few remain evergreen and are read through centuries. Those books have influenced the lives of many.

I remember now about one library I have visited while I was at Hyderabad. It is the Com. P.Sundarayya Memorial Library at the CPI(M) Party Office. The library is small compared to many other libraries. But the speciality is something else. Out of the total books, I was told that about 50,000 books are from the personal collection of Com. P.Sundarayya himself and another about 35,000 from the collection of Com. Basavapunnaiah, another senior leader of CPI(M). Both were PB Members of the CPI(M) and the former was also the General Secretary of the CPI(M). In most of these books you can see some notes made by these leaders. I was surprised at the large number of books read by these stalwarts.

The late Com.P.Govinda Pillai, senior leader of CPI(M) in Kerala was a writer, who was a wide range reader. Whenever on tour, or in fact at any time, you can find two or three big books with him carried in a bag, which is to be read, whenever opportunity comes.

You cannot compare Com. EMS Namboodiripad with anybody else. As another leader said, Com.EMS was a human computer. His reading was vast and covered almost everything in the realms of books and remembered them and utilised them for the benefit of the people and the party.

There are many more and will be many more. Libraries are opened and maintained for the benefit of book reading for all. Many poor students, who could not purchase costly books have been the beneficiaries of the libraries. The left movement in Kerala has been one of the reasons for the large number of libraries in Kerala.

Reading is learning and is power. In the new technology era, the importance of printed books may go down a little. Still the books will continue to influence the people for a very long time.

Lakhs of priceless and very important books on history, literature etc. have been taken away from India during the British rule and are kept at London Library. It is time that the Government of India demanded that these books be returned to India.

One recent news. The Oxford Dictionary is not going to be printed after the present one in printing is published. This new Dictionary is in 40 Volumes. The Publishers state that it will not be possible in future to print the same since it may go to many more volumes. Instead it will be e-dictionary.It is just like the disappearance of the Telephone Directory in the country.
