Complete the process of sale of scraps in all SSAs

BSNL, selling of scraps

According to the financial statements of BSNL it is seen that the income from miscellaneous receipts which may include the selling of scraps is about Rs.70 crores. This is far less than what should be, if all the SSAs have done the job fully with regard to selling of scraps.
As per the reports received by us, there are many SSAs where the scraps are heaped in the store or compounds for years together and has not been disposed off. There are much scraps in the various telecom factories/telecom stores also. By selling the scraps, there are two benefits. One, the company will get some revenue and secondly, the space where the scraps are dumbed will be free for other use. In the factories, the zinc ash etc. keeping will adversely affect the health of the workers also.
The BSNL management should take speedy action for selling of the scraps and getting revenue out of it. BSNL Unions at the SSA level should also take up the issue with the GMs and ensure that selling of scraps is done at the earliest.

BSNL Revival, Forum suggestions

The BSNL Management has initiated taking some action on the suggestions put forward by the Forum of Unions/Associations on Revival of BSNL, in the meeting on 30th November 2013, called by CMD BSNL to present “Awareness Programme”. In two circulars dated 16th and 18th December, CGMs have been asked to do the needful in the matters raised by the Forum. Copies of the letters are published in the websites of the Unions/associations including BSNLEU.
We hope that on other issues also, the Management will initiate necessary action.

Arbitrary Action of Management in restricting items in National Council unwarranted

Arbitray decision, BSNL, NC, Protest

The first meeting of the National Council, the negotiating machinery in BSNL, is scheduled to be held on 23rd December 2013. The Staff Side ha given 17 important items for discussion after consultation within the recognised unions.
Now, the Management has circulated the first ten items only as the items for discussion in the NC meeting, dropping the other 7 items. No discussion was held with the Staff Side, either Leader or Secretary. This arbitrary action of the management is unwarranted and is against the convention for the last 12 years since the NC has started. The management did not even discuss the issue with the staff side, which they could have done, if there was some difficulty for them.
The Secretary Staff Side, Com.P.Abhimanyu, has strongly protested against this arbitrary action.
The least the management can do is to immediately correct the indiscretion it has done, by including the dropped items in the agenda of the NC and intimate the same to the staff side members, which will avoid a confrontation, created by the management.

Strike ballot by Railway employees

The Railway employees will be taking strike ballot on 21-22 December 2013 on the basis of the 36 point Charter of Demands, which they have already submitted to the Government. The demands include wage rise, guaranteed pension scheme instead of contributory pension, compassionate appointments to the wards of deceased employees, special consideration for women in duties etc. The call for strike ballot has been given by the All India Railway Men’s Federation, which is the majority union in Railways. The results of the strike ballot will be announced on 23rd December, said Com. Shiv Gopal Mishra, Secretary General of AIRF.
The demands of the railway employees are fully justified and the government needs to consider the issues favourably and settle them, avoiding a strike in the biggest industry in the country employees about 12 lakhs of workers.

Strike by Bank Employees

The strike by the Public Sector Bank employees on 18th December 2013, completely paralysed the banking sector. The one day strike was called by the United Forum of Bank Employees (UFBE), consisting of all the Bank Employees Unions and representing about 70 lakh of workers on the demand of wage rise, against government proposal to issue bank licence to corporates etc. We congratulate the Bank employees for the successful strike and demands the government and the Indian Bank Association to concede the just demands of the Bank Employees.

Vodafone issued with tax demand of Rs. 3,700 crores

Compromise of tax - Vodafone - Telecom

The Income Tax Department has issued a fresh demand notice for Rs. 3,700 crores on Vodafone, the British Telco. And as usual, the latter has denied that it has any tax due and to be paid.
Earlier, the Vodafone was issued with a notice for Rs.20,000 crore which is also contested and not paid.
Tax notices are regularly sent, but the MNCs are capable of manipulating the government machinery and avoiding paying tax or at least getting it reduced or delayed for years together and compromised later.
The MNCs based in UK, US etc. still feels that Indian government can be made compromising with regard to their issues utilising their governments. It has happened many time earlier. This unethical situation has got to be put an end to.

Com. Suseela Gopalan, death anniversary

Comrade Suseela Gopalan, senior leader of CPI(M), former Minister in LDF government in Kerala, Member of Parliament, former President of AIDWA and wife of Communist legend Com. A.K.Gopalan, passed away 12 years earlier on 19th December 2001. On her 12th death anniversary, I pay my respectful homage to Comrade Suseela Gopalan!

She had always been close to the working class and was formerly Chairman of the P and T co-ordinating Committee Kerala. During her MP days, she took up a lot of issues of the workers in the Parliament and settled many of them. I had the opportunity to meet her and discuss the workers’ issues, while Com. AKG was alive and afterwards.

Red Salute to Com. Suseela Gopalan!

Lok Pal Bill

At last the Lok Pal Bill is passed by both houses of the Parliament and will become an Act after the approval of the President.
All the political parties except SP supported the bill.It is not everybody was happy, but the results of the recent assembly elections, the people’s anger against the high corruption and the forthcoming General elections – all compelled even the unwilling parties also to support the bill.
There are many weakness in the bill, which has to be rectified later.
