Private Telcos approach HC for extension of 2G licences

The private telecom companies have made it a practice to approach the courts for each and every decisions of the DOT and the government, which are not suitable to them. They will try to maximum pressurise the government and get what they require. In case, the pressure tactics fail, then they approach the courts. There is nothing wrong in approaching the courts, but the same is being done to maximise the profits.

This time, Vodafone, Air-tel and Loop Mobile have filed cases in Delhi High Court with regard to the extension of their 2G licences. The government has separated spectrum and licence, which was the system earlier. But these companies want the 2G spectrum allotment to be continued on the 2014 conditions, even after the period will be  over by 2014.

Govt. becomes soft on Vodafone, ready for compromise

Compromise of tax - Vodafone - Telecom

In a shift to the earlier position that the Vodafone has to pay the Rs. 11,000 crore tax to the government, Kapil Sibal, Communications minister who is also the law Minister, has stated that the government is prepared to have conciliation in the matter. This was expected at any stage. The British company, Vodafone, has been able to influence the India government  through its government also for a compromise. The statement of the Law Minister is a clear indication that the UPA government has already compromised the issue.

PSU – Air India to turn around, loss reduced

Air india, PSU

Good News for Air India! The losses of Air India this got reduced by Rs. 1,209 crore compared to last year. The loss for 2012-13 will be only 3,989 crore while it was Rs. 5,198 in 2011-12.

Air India was in a difficult situation due to the wrong policy decisions, inept management and also the stiff competition. The Air-India, Indian Airlines merger without sufficient planning also created many HR problems. Purchasing a large number of planes without requirement was another reason. It posted losses year after year.

The downfall of King Fischer Airlines, as also some strict supervision and efforts on the part of the employees and their unions have resulted in improvement to the extent that the losses have come down this year. But that itself is not sufficient. The loss should cease and profit to be posted. I wish for a speedy recovery for the PSU, Air India.

BSNL, GoMSpectrum refund, MTNL protest

It is reported that DOT has recommended to the Group of Ministers headed by P.Chidambaram, Finance Minister, that BSNL and MTNL be refunded the amount for the surrendered spectrum by them. The amount will come to Rs. 6,275 Crore for BSNL and Rs. 4,534 to MTNL.

The recommendation is based on the fact that no mention was made when the spectrum was allotted to the PSUs that they will not be refunded if the spectrum is surrendered as was made in the case of the private operators. Both the PSUs are in loss for the last four years and the GoM is to find out ways and means to revitalise and revive them.

The Forum of BSNL Unions / Associations have already submitted many suggestions/proposals for the revival of the PSUs, in which one of the demands is the same as above.

PSUs – Government to utilise surplus money for Capital expenditure

PSUs - surplus cash

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has decided that about Rs. 1.42 lakh crore will be utilised from the surplus of 23 profitable Central PSUs like ONGC, Oil India, GAIL, Indian Oil, SAIL, NMDC, Power grid, NHPC, NTPC, Coal India etc.

Many of the PSUs have exceeded their revenue target and are performing well. The government wants to tap it all to reduce its financial stability.

It was in the same way that all the surplus cash of BSNL was taken away by government in some form or other.

High performance of some of the PSUs are given below. They have achieved either more than the targets or very near to targets:

Neyveli Lignite Corpn   : 108%

Power Grid                  : 100%

Indian Oil                    :  97%

NTPC                          :  94%

ONGC                         :  89%

Oil India                      :  83%

NHPC                          :  81%

What is the target achievement for BSNL?  Why not BSNL could achieve some thing similar?

Prime Minister Should Explain – CPI(M)

Coal Gate - PM - Ministers - CPI(M)

New Delhi, May 13: CPI(M) today hit out at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for “presiding over a very corrupt regime” and demanded that he should explain his and PMO’s role in the coal and 2G scams.
“The Prime Minister is presiding over a very corrupt regime and his image has been tarnished. We are waiting to hear from the Prime Minister. He has to come out and explain his role and that of his office in both the coal block allocation case and in the 2G spectrum matter,” party General Secretary Prakash Karat told reporters here.
Maintaining that the Prime Minister “cannot escape responsibility for these affairs”, he said Singh had “directly looked after” the Coal Ministry and a Joint Secretary in PMO was involved in discussions to change the CBI status report on the coal issue to the Supreme Court.
“We hope he will eventually come out and tell us what really happened,” Karat said.
Asked why CPI(M) was not demanding the Prime Minister’s resignation, he said the CBI investigation was still on and “that is why the CBI investigation report is significant. Questions are being raised … so let him explain. We want him to come clean and tell us what happened.”
He slammed Congress for the “belated  forced resignations” of P K Bansal and Ashwani Kumar as Union Ministers, saying this “exposes the hypocrisy of Congress and the government, which blamed the opposition for disrupting Parliament proceedings since the wrong-doings of the Ministers became known.”
“Both Congress and the government are jointly responsible for delaying this decision which led to disruption of the House,” Karat said. (PTI)
