It is difficult to think that fifteen years have passed after Com. E.M.S.Namboodiripad left us. But it is the fact. The great Marxist ideologue, intellectual, politician, historian, writer, speaker (and what not?) died on 19th March 1998. His entire life was dedicated to the toiling masses and the party.
Com.E.M.S., born in a big land-lord and aristocratic Brahmin family, became the adopted son of the toiling masses and working class. He revolted against the age old caste system and along with a group of young activists like him fought for reforming the Brahmin Community and freedom for women. He was one of the first four Communists along with Com.P.Krishna Pillai, who formed the Communist Party in Kerala.
Com. EMS was the first Chief Minister of Kerala State. The Communist party was elected in the 1957 election in Kerala and the ministry was formed with EMS as the Chief Minister. Important legislations were made including the Land Reforms which entirely changed Kerala for better. He was again Chief Minister in 1968, when he refused to implement the Essential Service Maintenance Act (ESMA) against the Central Government Employees in the 1968 One Day Token Strike even at the risk of being dismissed by the Central Government.
He inaugurated the historic All India Conference of All India Telecom Employees Union Class III held at Trivandrum in 1994, in which Com. Moni Bose was elected as President and me as General Secretary. I cherish the memory of meeting him several times whether in Kerala or in Delhi and the guidance he has given for the movement to march ahead.
My respectful homage to the memory of the great Communist! Red Salute to Com. EMS Namboodiripad!
