Vayalar - Punnapra

The 66th anniversary of the Vayalar armed struggle and martyrdom of hundreds of comrades who faced the army of Travancore Raja and Diwan C.P.Ramaswamy Iyer  was observed at  Vayalar (Alappuzha) Martyrs cemetary. Top leaders of CPI and CPI(M) and thousands of people attended the function which continued from morning to evening. The red flag was hoisted in the morning and homage paid. There  were speeches, Kavi Sammelan and other programmes.

Vayalar and Punnappra will always be the inspiration of the toiling masses and the common people for whom the martyrs sacrificed their lives.

Sunil Gangopadhyay

Kolkata, Oct 25 : The mortal remains of eminent Bengali litterateur Sunil Gangopadhyay who died here two days ago were consigned to flames today.     His son Souvik, who arrived from Boston yesterday performed the last rites at the Keoratala cremation grounds. Souvik told PTI that his father had once expressed a desire to donate his body after death.     “But there is no such will of his. It was just a thought in his mind and so we did not donate his body,” he said.    Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, cabinet colleagues and mourners walked the five kilometres from Rabindra Sadan, the state auditorium, to the cremation ground in south Kolkata with the Kolkata Police escorting the cortege.     At the Rabindra Sadan there was an unending stream of mourners who waited to pay their last respects and Banerjee, mike in hand, intervened to control the crowd.     Earlier, cutting across party lines Banerjee, cabinet colleagues Partha Chatterjee and Subrata Mukherjee, WBPCC president Pradeep Bhattacharya, former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacherjee, Left Front chairman Biman Bose and Leader of the Opposition Surayakanta Mishra laid wreaths on the body.     Film-makers Mrinal Sen, Aparna Sen, poet Sankha Ghosh, writers Sirshendu Mukhopadhyay and Mani Shankar Mukhopadhyay, popularly known as ‘Shankar’, were also present.     Some admirers of the writer who was born at Faridpur in erstwhile East Pakistan, now Bangladesh also turned up. In the morning the body was taken to the office of Anandabazar Patrika, where Gangopadhyay had begun his career as a sub-editor and was associated with ‘Desh’ magazine published by them.(Courtsey: Ganashakti)

US Military rapes young Japan woman – Strong protests

Rape in Japan by US

Strong protest demonstrations were held in many places in Japan demanding strong action against the US military personnel who brutally attacked raped a young woman. The US have military bases in Japan. The protesters waved placards saying ” No Rape! No Base!”. A paper report from Japan is given below:

Following the arrests this week of two sailors in the alleged rape of a woman in Okinawa, the U.S. military vowed Friday to impose preventative steps, including a curfew and retraining programs.
The measures were announced at a joint news conference held by U.S. Ambassador John V. Roos and Lt. Gen Salvatore Angelella, the commander of U.S. Forces, Japan, at the embassy in Tokyo. Angelella said the curfew — 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. — would start immediately and cover all U.S. military personnel in Japan, including those on temporary assignment or who are transiting to another country. The duration of the curfew is open-ended. Angelella also said core value retraining for military and civilians will be conducted by subordinate commanders. Roos repeated in unusually stern terms that the U.S. government and military will cooperate with the probe by Japanese authorities, and that he shares the anger of Okinawa residents. “I have a 25-year-old daughter myself, so this is very personal to me,” Roos said in tears. The preventative measures came three days after the alleged rape by two U.S. sailors. The suspects were identified as Seaman Christopher Browning and Petty Officer 3rd Class Skyler Dozierwalker, based at Joint Naval Air Station, Fort Worth, Texas. They allegedly attacked the woman, who is in her 20s, Tuesday in the city of Okinawa. While Dozierwalker has reportedly confessed, Browning has denied the allegations. Police Thursday reportedly found some of the victim’s belongings in their hotel room.( From The Japan Times)

Penalty for understating revenue by private telcos.

Telecom - penalty for private telcos

Shri Kapil Sibal, Minister Communications, have approved the proposal of the DOT to impose a penalty of about Rs. 823 crore on the private telcos for understating their revenue and cheating the government on both payment of taxes as also revenue share to DOT.

It is well-known  that the private companies are adopting all dubious means to evade tax and other payments to government to increase their profits. This has been going on since they entered the telecom sector. They got all benefits from the government and also cheated the government. Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance, Tata Teleservices – all are involved in this scam. All of them together have understated together, as reported in the press, an amount not less than Rs. 10,268 crore during 200-07 and 2007-08.

Let us remember that when the private companies were granted licence for mobile services, one justification the government has said was that these licences would get about Rs. 1.25 lakh crore revenue for the government. On demand the licence fee was changed in to revenue sharing by which the government was to get about Rs. 55,000 crore at the minimum. But what actually the government got was a few thousands of crores of rupees.

In each and every agreement and transactions, the government has been submitting and succumbing to the unreasonable demands of the private telcos, while completely taking a negative attitude towards the justified demands of the BSNL and MTNL .

Will the government take a firm position to impose and collect the penalty as decided now or succumb to the pressure of the private companies as usual?

United Nations completes 57 years

UNO - 57th anniversary

The United Nations Organisation (UNO) which was formed on 24th October 1945 after the Second World War ( 1942-45) by 51 countries ‘committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights’ is completing 57 years of service. At present there are 193 member countries in the UNO. The UN has intervened on many occasions to bring down conflicts and restore peace among countries. But in the last few decades after the collapse of the USSR, it is almost being controlled by the US and many decisions are becoming partisan. However, its contribution in the past has been of great help to many nations. Let us hope that UNO functions effectively to bring world peace.
