Karnataka Circle determined to improve its strength

13 Monday Aug 2012

The Circle Conference of BSNLEU was held at Koodal Sangamam, the merger of Rivers Krishna and  Mala Prabha  in Bagalkot District, Bijapur SSA on 11 -12 August 2012. This is the place where the great social reformer of 12th Century,  Basavanna preached and also committed suicide to escape from the high caste Brahmins who chased him for organising a marriage between a dalit and a Brahmin. As the Minister of the King he made many reforms and also initiated free discussion groups, all of which were not digested by the rulers and the priests.

Koodal Sangamam is a beautiful place with the background of the Sangamam of the rivers. The atmosphere was cool and there were showers of rain. But it did not affect the conduct of the Conference. Every thing was arranged well by the Reception Committee headed by Com.GB Salakki AGS and SR Naik, District Secretary.

The Conference was attended by the President and General Secretary of BSNLEU, Coms. Namboodiri and Abhimanyu, who explained the latest position on the issues and the organisational matters.

The discussion by the delegates were mostly based on the issues connected with the expansion and development as also improvement of the financial position of BSNL. The need for providing a better service was pointed out by many. The CGM and other top officers also participated and addressed.

The Conference decided to improve the union membership and called upon the workers to give a better victory to BSNLEU in the next verification!

The Conference unanimously elected Comrade B.P.Narayana as Circle President, C.K.Gundanna as Circle Secretary and Keshav as Circle Treasurere.

Left Parties plan struggles

10 Friday Aug 2012

New Delhi, Aug 9 : Left parties would raise the banner of protest against the UPA government’s ‘anti-people’ economic policies by holding a dharna in the Parliament precincts next week, Left sources said today.     Parliamentary leaders of CPI-M, CPI, RSP and Forward Bloc met here today and decided that their MPs would concentrate on raising issues like price rise, unemployment, food security, agrarian crisis, FDI in retail and the general anti-avoidance rules (GAAR) on taxing foreign investments, they said.     The leaders also decided to hold a protest dharna at the main gate of the Parliament House on Tuesday, the sources said.     The meeting was attended among others by Sitaram Yechury, Basudeb Acharia (both CPI-M), D Raja and Gurudas Dasgupta (both CPI).     The four parties recently staged a five-day dharna here on the issue of food security, demanding amendments to the Food Security Bill to include universalisation of public distribution system and ban on futures and forward trading in foodgrains and essential items, among other things.     The CPI-M has been demanding that the government enacts a law to make the right to food a fundamental right in the backdrop of the UN Global Hunger Index, which ranks India 67th among 80 countries which suffer from acute hunger of its people. It has estimated that 25 per cent of the world’s hungry today were Indians.     Besides growing inequalities, Yechury recently said widespread agrarian distress, suicides by farmers and drastic reduction in the per capita availability of foodgrains and pulses show the rise of absolute poverty among certain sections of people.

The meeting of the change of designation committee was held today. The staff side  demanded early agreement on the demands put by the staff side. The staff side once again reiterated the demands with full data and justification. It seems that the official side is against granting the designation with Officer, Engineer etc. Staff side expressed its strong protest against the totally unjustified stand of the official side.

The next meeting will be held on 24th August.

PFRDA Bill in this session of Parliament?

08 Wednesday Aug 2012

Whether PFRDA, Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill and Banking (Amendment) Bill will come to the Parliament in this session? As per reports in the media, the chances are dim since the government do not have the majority in the Rajya Sabha to get them passed. Some of the allies. Like Mamata Government, are not in support of these bills.  The chances are that to avoid complication, the bills may not be presented in this session.

The Central Government is reported to have decided to approach the Supreme Court to get the time for 2G Spectrum auction extended from the present September to January 2013 for the final allotment. This is the second time that the DOT is approaching the SC for extension.

Although the proposal for Rs. 18,000 as the base price for 5 Mhrz spectrum was recommended by the TRAI and DOT, on the pressure from the MNCs, foreign governments and also the private telecom companies, the same has been reduced to Rs. 14,000 by the government. Though the spectrum charges are reduced, there will be no reduction of charges on the consumers.

Now the Information Memorandum will be released on 27August, Pre-bid conference will be held on 6 September, Notice inviting applications will be on 1 October, Mock Auction on 6 November and the E-Auction will start from 12 November. The allotment of spectrum to the successful bidders will be given by 30  January 2013. It is expected that the government will receive approximately Rs. 36,000 crore.

Seventy Years of Quit India Movement

08 Wednesday Aug 2012

The Quit India Movement of 1942 is completing 70 years. It was on 9th August 1942, that the Quit India Movement started demanding the Britishers to leave the country. It made ripples all over the country and the struggle took place which accelerated the Freedom Struggle.

We got freedom 5 years after the Quit India movement. But have been able to live up to the ideals and visions of the freedom fighters and martyrs. Even after more than 60 years of independence, the majority people of the country are deprived of even the basic necessities.

Rabindra Sangeetha – an eternal music and melody

07 Tuesday Aug 2012

On the 72nd death anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, I pay my homage and respects to the great poet, nobel-laureate and cultural giant.

Rabindra Sangeetha, with its poetical and musical melody has charmed people world over. But it is in Bengal, Rabindra sangeetha has become a way of life. Whether it is in a musical concert, conferences, in conversations  or even while travelling in the train, you will be fully aware of the impact of the Rabindra Sangeetha all around you.

It is not only in W.Bengal, but in Bangladesh also, Rabindranath is an icon and if my memory is correct, just like the National Anthem ‘Janaganamana’ in India, the Bangladesh also has its national anthem ‘Amar Shonar Bangla’ written by Rabindranatha Tagore. The fact is that both these songs were written before the Independence since  Tagore passed away before Independence.

He left a great heritage and message  for India and the world.

No more Hiroshima, Nagasaki! No more Atom Bombs!

06 Monday Aug 2012

On this day, 6th August, in 1945, the United States dropped the atom bomb ‘Little Boy’ in Hiroshima in Japan killing more than one lakh people and maiming much more who suffered radiation and died later or suffered their entire life. Another bomb named ‘Fat Man’ was dropped in Nagasaki, in Japan itself on 9th August 1946, killing more than 80,000 and maiming more.

This massacre of common people, and not military, was carried out after the World War II was almost over and Germany has been defeated and Japan was going to surrender. In fact, it was a power show by the US and more than that, an experiment of dropping of atom bombs on the common innocent people to find out its destructive power. The cruel and demonic culture of imperialism was revealed to the entire world.

No more atom bombs have been used since then. But the horrible memory of those bombs is still fresh in the memory of not only the people of Japan, but the entire world.

Thousands and thousands of candles will be lit at Hiroshima and Nagasaki and all over the world in the memory of those innocent people died due to the bombings.

Let there be no further Hiroshima or Nagasaki! Let the world be made free from such destructive weapons!
