Rise in Postal, Railway charges ?

08 Thursday Mar 2012

It seems that moves are on by the Central government to increase the Railway and Postal Tariffs. These are basic facilities and amenities / services which are maximum utilised by the people. Any hike in these services has to be done after much thought.

CPI(M) on Assembly Elections

07 Wednesday Mar 2012

CPI(M) press release on the recent elections is given below:

Overall results of the five assembly elections in UP, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur constitute a setback for the Congress party. It has the lost government in Goa; it has failed to win in Punjab, where it should have benefitted from the anti-incumbency against the Akali Dal-led government and the cyclical  change in government that has been taking place there. It has fared badly in Uttar Pradesh and just managed to be ahead by one seat in Uttarakhand wherein too it should have gained from the anti-incumbency factor. The sole exception has been its outright victory in Manipur. But this has no wider significance given the abnormal and specific conditions prevailing there.

Part of this failure can be attributed to the people’s discontent against price rise and corruption for which they hold the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre responsible.

The victory of the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh is remarkable. The verdict is not only against the Mayawati government, but the people have rejected the BJP and the Congress too. The BJP in particular has failed to make any headway.

The results show also that the BJP is not seen as a credible alternative to the Congress. Apart from its performance in UP, the BJP lost in Uttarkhand and its seats have been reduced in Punjab.

8th March – International Women’s Day

07 Wednesday Mar 2012

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in General

8th March is being observed and organised as the International Women’s Day every year since 1917. 8th March also is the date in which the Russian Revolution started. The Revolution succeeded on 17th October 1917. USSR observed the day in 1917 itself and later gave holiday  for 8th March. In China also it is holiday.

Women is part of the humanity with equal rights and responsibilities. But through centuries her rights and importance have been reduced by the male dominated society  and made her almost a slave in the kitchen. Many changes have taken place asserting her position in the society, but much more is to be done. Not only on the Women’s Day, but through out the year after year. Let all of us strive for a society where man and woman are treated equal.

The elections – a verdict against the Congress

06 Tuesday Mar 2012

The results of the assembly elections to the five states have been announced. Except in Manipur, where it won handsomely for the third term and in Uttarakhand where it has got one seat more than the BJP, in all the other three states it failed utterly. Goa, where it was the ruling party is lost to BJP. In Punjab, a historical victory has been secured by the Akali Dal, destroying the coming back hope of Congress.

But the worst defeat is in U.P. Despite the entire top team of the Congress under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, campaigned in each and every corner of U.P, it utterly failed to create any impact. It got only 27/28 seats and its ally a mere 9 seats, the total coming to less than 40 in a state with 403 seats. To add to the woes, it lost in the family constituencies of Amethi and Rae Bareily.

Mulayam Singh, Samajwadi Party,  has won with a huge majority in UP. No exit poll saw what was coming. Everybody thought that it will be difficult to cross the 200 line. But it has got more than 220 seats.

All these results will have repercussions in the political situation in the country as also the 2014 General elections. The main point in the elections is that the people are wooing the regional parties more and more. Further this is also a reaction on the part of the people against corruption and anti-people ploicies of the central government.

Petrol price may be hiked by Rs.5 per litre.

06 Tuesday Mar 2012

The Central Government was waiting for the elections in the five states to be over to increase the prise of petrol, The moment the elections are over it is proposing to increase the petrol to the extent of Rs. 5 ? Already the prices have been increased more than 10 times and the present proposal increase will put the people to more trouble. It is reported that oil companies are also pressing for the hike. The Members of Parliament has to take the issue seriously so that the government taxes on petrol is reduced so that the price also will come down. Another matter  – It is very clear that this government is not interested in putting a stop to the price rise. It is on the side of the businessmen and corporates who want to increase the prices to reap much more profit.

Parliament starts on 12th March, will continue up to 22nd May

05 Monday Mar 2012

The Budget session will  start on 12th March and will continue till 22 May as per schedule. This session was postponed due to the Assembly elections in UP. Like the earlier two sessions, this also will be tumultuous with so many critical issues going to come up for discussion. The government will try to get passed certain bills like PFRDA, NCTC etc. which the opposition is going to oppose as was the case in the last session. The corruption issue will continue with more corruption cases coming to the fore and the latest Supreme Court order on 2G issue. Many state governments have already opposed the decisions of the Central Government which cut at the root of Federalism.

Certainly the Budget session will see fireworks

A meeting of the senior trade union leaders of Calicut

05 Monday Mar 2012

Today, I got an invitation to address a meeting of the old leaders of service and teachers unions who were part of the union activities in the 1960s, 1970s etc. which is scheduled to be held on 14th March at Calicut. This is being organised in connection with the 20th Party Congress of CPI(M) to be held at Calicut in April 2012.

During the period 1964 to 1991, I was working at Calicut, except for some years on transfer to Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram etc. In Calicut we had a very good team of workers and leaders of the service and TU organisations which functioned jointly and organised many struggles. Whether it is the 1960 or 1968 strike by the Central Government employees, the railway strike of 1974 or the various strikes of the state government employees and teachers or the struggles of the Electricity and transport workers, everyone  stood and co-operated together. The Workers Centre was the umbrella organisation which included all these unions and safeguarded the struggles.

It will be a pleasurable meeting so that the workers and leaders can exchange a lot of memories of the great struggles, agitations and the way victimisations were faced. I congratulate the organisers for this programme.

Earthquake in Delhi today – earthquake in Delhi and UP tomorrow.

05 Monday Mar 2012

Today’s earthquake in Delhi was mild and no casualties were reported. But it gave a jolt to the citizens of Delhi.

But tomorrow, 6th May, will witness a bigger earthquake with shock to many when the results of the UP elections are announced. Big trees may fall and the future of many will be doomed. All those whose interests are very much in the elections will have a sleepless night. This earthquake will have its strong waves in Delhi also. This earthquake is expected. Which way the disaster will come is the thinking of many.
