Stephen Hawking, the great physicist and a medical marvel, is 70

08 Sunday Jan 2012

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in WORLD NEWS

Defying the odds of medicine, Stephen Hawking, widely regarded as one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists, celebrated his 70th birthday on Sunday.

The Lucasian professor of mathematics and theoretical physics at the University of Cambridge has 12 honorary degrees. But aside from his academic achievements, the professor is also something of a medical marvel.

He has long defied and baffled medical experts who predicted he had just months to live in 1963 when he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), a deadly disease.

Only five per cent of people with the form of MND that he has — a condition called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s disease — survive for more than a decade after diagnosis.

The fact that Mr. Hawking, Britain’s most celebrated physicist, has lived for nearly half a century with a condition that progressively attacks the nerves serving the muscles of the body has been described as remarkable.

“I have been lucky, that my condition has progressed more slowly than is often the case. But it shows that one need not lose hope,” Mr. Hawking says.

“I am quite often asked: ‘How do you feel about having ALS?’

“The answer is, not a lot. I try to lead as normal a life as possible, and not think about my condition, or regret the things it prevents me from doing, which are not that many,” the BBC quoted him as saying.

Currently Director of Research at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge, where he also founded the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology, Mr. Hawking previously (1979-2009) held the Lucasian Professorship of Mathematics at Cambridge, a post once held by Isaac Newton.

Although he has now stepped down from the Lucasian chair after a historic 30 years, he continues working at the University of Cambridge and recently published a new book — The Grand Design.

The grandfather-of-three continues to seek out new challenges.

Mr. Hawking recently experienced first-hand what space travel feels like by taking a zero-gravity flight in a specially modified plane. (Courtsey : Hindu)

A call from a senior leader, Comrade Harsulkar.

07 Saturday Jan 2012

At about 1930 hours today, 7th January, I got an unexpected call. It was from Comrade V.A.Harsulkar, the former General Secretary of T-III Union for a very long period and then President, till BSNLEU was formed. He was one member of the Presidium at Vishakhapatnam Telecom Convention in 2001 which was the foundation conference of BSNLEU as also who hoisted the National Flag at the start of the Convention. We wanted him to be one of the Patron of the new union, but he politely declined. I had visited him at his residence two-three times afterwards as courtesy call.

He has called me to congratulate for having bought a building for the BSNLEU at New Delhi. He told that he has seen the report in the union journal, Telecrusader, which he is receiving regularly. He was  happy  and enquired about the location of the building etc. I Invited him to attend the inauguration on 22nd March  and he assured to come, health permitting. He might have crossed 85. Com Harsulkar had a dream  to have  an own building for T.III union at Delhi and had collected some amount, but the plan did not work. The money was used by the next general secretary to own a rest house at Kanyakumari. So, he will be doubly happy that BSNLEU, which he presided at the formation Conference, has fulfilled his dream of having union’s own building in Delhi.

Thank you, Comrade Harsulkar for taking keen interest in the union even at this stage and wishing to come to attend the inaugural function. Hearty welcome to you!

Former Telecom Minister Sukh Ram sent to Tihar Jail in corruption case.

07 Saturday Jan 2012

In addition to A.Raja, former communications minister, another former communications Minister Sukh Ram also has reached Tihar jail. He has been convicted for three years imprisonment in the 1993 telecom scam case. How many more former telecom ministers are going to join these two is anybody’s guess.

As per neo-liberalisation and privatisation policy, the telecom sector has been opened in the 1990s. The entire deals in telecom during the 1990s and 2000s are full of scams, corruption, favouritism and what not? A perusal of the grant of licences to private companies, the shifting to Revenue sharing from Licence Fee, allotment of spectrum 2G as well as 3G, illegal roaming, cheating of the government by the private companies, violation of the companies Act, giving false return to the government to avoid paying full taxes – all these are mingled with the mud of bribery and corruption. The only issue to be seen is which former communication minister is not involved. The neo-liberal policy and so-called reforms have been utilised by the politicians, bureaucrats, corporates and their henchmen to accumulate ill-gotten wealth. The entire situation is disgusting.

When the telecom sector will be free from this stinking corruption? The workers have to move without delay against this bribery and corruption. The Unions have to give the lead.

The Unity of the Seven Sisters of North East

07 Saturday Jan 2012

The Circle Conferences of Assam, North East I and North East II circles are being held together at Silchar (Assam) from 6th to 8th January 2012. This Joint Conference is a long tradition of the North East Circles. Not only telecom unions but also Postal unions together, the Joint Conferences were being held till a few years back. Now, the Postal Unions are holding separately. Earlier there was only one circle called North East Circle including the present Assam, NE I & NE II circles. Later it was bifurcated  to Assam and North East. Again  North East was divided in to NE I & NE II. These three circles represent the seven states of North East Region viz. Assam (Assam Circle) Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram (NE I) and Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh (NE II), which are called the seven sisters of North East.  The Union has demanded the management to bifurcate NE I and NE II again so that each state will have its own circle just as in other states. But the management did not agree. There will be much more development if these states are having their own telecom circles. One of the reasons for the backwardness of telecom services in NE I and NE II is this. To go from one state to another , most of these states have to go through Assam and it es a lot of time.

These three circles are the strong holds of BSNLEU. In the first verification BSNLEU got  huge majority in all these circles, which is the position even now. While NFTE BSNL got 124 votes out of 5992 votes in Assam, In North EasT I, it got 11 out of 2127 and  in NE II it got 4 out of 1696.

All these circles are very systematic and have a strong tradition of democratic functioning. My Hearty Greetings to their Joint Coircle Conference!

‘In the Land of Pame’ – about WFTU Congress at Athens

07 Saturday Jan 2012

In the Deshabhimani Weekly an article by Comrade A.K.Ramesh, All India President BEFI, on the WFTU Congress  held at Athens 6th to 10th April 2011 was serially published in ten continuous issues. I thought I will read it together and since the final part was published last week, I read it completely yesterday night. It was very interesting. Since his start from Delhi and till  return to India, even minor incidents have been described in a very attractive way. But the important part is about the discussion held in the Conference and the inspiration that the eight hundreds and odd delegates got from the conference. A clear idea of the Congress as also about the grim economic situation in Greece are explained. The excellent way which the Congress was conducted is appreciable. Sufficient number of photoes are also there. Com. P. Abhimanyu, GS, BSNLEU had also attended the Congress.

Congratulations to Com. A.K.Ramesh for the very interesting report.

All the Central Trade Unions viz. An All India Convention of PSU Unions will be held at Bangalore on 13 January to make plans for making it a complete success in the Public Sector Units.

The Joint Action Committee of BSNL Associations and Unions in its meeting on 19th January is expected to take a favourable decision to participate in the strike. BSNLEU, NFTE, FNTO etc. have already taken the decision to participate in this great strike.

Let us march ahead to make the strike a total strike.

Newly Recruited JTOs/JAOs get additional 5 increments – Why not for TTAs?

06 Friday Jan 2012

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in BSNL - Better Service to the Nation

The newly recruited JTOs and JAOs have been granted 5 additional increments to compensate for the loss in emoluments after the wage revision w.e.f. 01-01-2007. The newly  recruited TTAs  had  similar loss in emoluments. They should also be granted five increments. BSNLEU has already taken the case with the BSNL management. There should not be any delay in ending this discrimination. Justice should be meted out to the newly recruited TTAs.

2G Scam – SC irked at laxity in enquiry

06 Friday Jan 2012

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in 2G Scam Corruption, Uncategorized

The Supreme Court expressed its displeasure in the lagging enquiry on the 2G Scam and issued notices to the DOT, CBI and Enforcement Directorate asking them to reply to the allegations of laxity in the enquiry before 20th January when the case will be taken for next hearing.  It was hinted by the Counsel for CPIL Shri Prashant Bhushan that Law Minister Salman Khurshid ws interfering in the case.

It is well known to all that the Government which said earlier that there was no loss in the 2G allotment will certainly try to save its face int scam. But the evidences are much against it. Sukh Ram, former telecom Minister, against whom case of corruption was going on  has now been convicted and jail sentence given. What will happen in the present case?
