National Council Standing Committee on 24th January 2012

22 Sunday Jan 2012

The Standing Committee of the National Council is going to be held on 24th January 2012 after a long time. It should have been held very much earlier. Only after continued insistence, it is being held. The management should understand that unnecessary delay on their part in settling  the issues will result in avoidable agitations by the workers. It is also necessary that the management side should come prepared to settle the genuine issues of the workers. It is the responsibility of the management not to antagonise the workers.

We have jurisdiction to decide over DOT’s direction on 3G – TDSAT

Telecom tribunal TDSAT dismissed on Friday the government’s plea challenging its jurisdiction to decide on 3G roaming dispute, but directed operators to submit copies of their agreements to the Department of Telecom (DoT). Dismissing the application, a two-member bench headed by justice S B Sinha held that the tribunal has power to decide over DoT’s direction on intra-circle 3G roaming agreements among operators. “We are of the opinion that this tribunal (TDSAT) has jurisdiction to decide on this matter (3G roaming dispute). Thus, the applications are dismissed,” the bench said. The tribunal directed five operators – Airtel, Vodafone, Idea, Aircel and Tata Tele – to hand over copies of their 3G roaming agreements to the DoT. (Courtsey: TOI)

The New Year Calender by Calicut District BSNLEU

21 Saturday Jan 2012

I am at Calicut since yesterday. I will return to Delhi on 23rd January. Today, the District Secretary, BSNLEU, Com. Jayaraj came to my residence and handed over to me about 10 calenders of 2012 published by the District Union. It is beautifully printed with multi-colours in an attractive manner. It is to be taken to CHQ for office and other comrades.

The Calicut District BSNLEU has been publishing the calendar for many years, which will be supplied to each and every member. You can see the calendar in homes of all our comrades. In addition to the usual information, the important dates connected with trade unions and especially of telecom are  noted in it.

I feel that this is a good system and also a propaganda for the union and can be emulated by others.

Supreme Court has bailed out Vodafone from paying Rs. 11,000 crore Income Tax, stating that the Government has no right to levy income tax on foreign companies for their international deals. The court also ordered that the Rs.2500 crore already paid by the company be returned with 4% interest within 2 months. The Supreme court issued this order on an appeal filed by Vodafone against the order of Bombay High Court asking the company to pay the Rs.11,000 crore income tax.

Continuing Suicides of farmers in Poschimbanga (W.B)

21 Saturday Jan 2012

When the newly elected workaholic Chief Minister of Poschimbanga was busy inaugurating the Digha beach festival when farmer Tapas Majhi from Purbasthali in Bardhaman was forced to commit suicide being unable to obtain the minimum price for the paddy that he has grown. This however is not the only example of the government’s failure to implement its much hyped agricultural policies. Last Sunday potato farmer Haridas Ratna of Habibpur, Malda too had committed suicide unable to obtain even the cost he has incurred for growing potato. The same fate was met by another farmer of Kalna. But the tears of these poor farmers and their families could not move the Chief Minister. Her priorities were apparent when she remained busy in bringing Digha at par with Goa and remaining oblivious to the predicaments of the farmers. Distress selling of crops as paddy and potato had become rampant in the State. Complains of potatoes rotting in cold storages across the State has been pouring in since the end of 2011, when increasing salary of its ministers three folds remains the prerogative of the insensible and insensitive government of Ma-Mati-Manush. Chief Secretary Samar Ghosh, on Saturday had not only refused to acknowledge that there had been any farmer suicide in the State due to huge debt burdens; he also shamelessly accredited the two deaths that he could confirm to family feuds. But proving the government a liar, farmer Haridas Ratna’s wife has written a letter on 12th of January itself to the Chief Minister confirming that her husband was forced to commit suicide because he was unable to obtain price for his crops and hence could not pay back the moneylender.  (Courtsey: Ganashakti)

Thousands join BSNLEU! Welcome to New Members!

20 Friday Jan 2012

It was expected. Thousands of BSNL workers have joined BSNL Employees Union during 15th December to 14th January period when the BSNL management has accorded time to enrol members of the unions. The continuous reports in the BSNLEU website confirm this.

Despite the unjustified and negative criticism of the NFTE , FNTO etc. the workers have understood from their own experience that the Wage revision and NEPP have been the best they have received in their entire life. They also appreciate the continuous struggles undertaken by BSNLEU to protect the interests of the workers. Naturally more and more workers will join BSNLEU.

Welcome to all New Members of BSNLEU! Congratulations to the branch/SSA level leaders and workers who made it possible. Without their support it would have been difficult to enrol these members.

We remember Comrade V.I.Lenin on his 88th death anniversary

20 Friday Jan 2012

History was created when the Soviet Union was born through revolution of 1917, removing the hated czar and starting the rule of the people. The Communist USSR within a short time advanced in all spheres including space travel. The mighty military of fascist Hitler met its Waterloo in Russia. The Red army of the Soviet Union reached Berlin, the capital of Hitler and raised the Red flag on the German Reichstag (Parliament on 1st May 1945 heralding the end of the II World War. The USSR helped many colonial countries including India in getting independence.

Comrade V.I.Lenin was the leader and architect of the great Russian Revolution. From 1917 to 1924 till his death he led the government and defended it from the attack of the combined imperialist forces. He was a revolutionary in all senses.

I pay respectful homage to Comrade Lenin! Red Salute to Comrade Lenin!

CPI(M) supports call for 28th February Strike

20 Friday Jan 2012

The Central Committee of the CPI(M) held at Kolkata extended its full support to the call of the central trade unions for a one-day general strike on February 28, 2012. This united action by all the trade unions has raised demands, which are not only in the interests of the working class but concern the people of the country as a whole. The Central Committee directed all its Party units to work wholeheartedly to make the strike a total success.

Will all other parties also support the strike, especially the Congress?

Fog, the spoil-sport

20 Friday Jan 2012

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in General

It was a long journey for me today from New Delhi to Kozhikode. I started at 0500 hours early morning from D-7 Telegraph Place to New Delhi Airport so that I can board the 0700 hours Calicut flight. The fog was so thick so that it was even difficult to see some 15 metres ahead. However I reached in time for check-in. I reached the boarding gate after security check by about 0615 hours. The boarding time was scheduled at 0620 hours.  Yes, all the passengers boarded by 0630 hours.I was feeling happy that despite the fog, the flight may start in time ie.0700 hours. That was my mistake.

Everybody were in their seats, mobile phones were switched off and seat-belts were tightened. Minutes ticked by and it was about half an hour.  Many have started sleeping also.  But the plane was standing still. There was no movement. Then came the announcement from the cock-pit. Due to severe fog, the vision is only up to 50 metres. The minimum vision for take off should be at least 125 metres. It is expected that by one hour, the vision may reach the minimum requirement. He also announced that break-fast will be supplied immediately ( to satisfy the passengers?)

Break-fast and tea/coffee were served. It was almost 0900 hours. But the visibility has not improved, announced the pilot. The TV screen in front of the passengers were put on and the cinemas/ songs started. Some started sleeping, some talking and others watching the cinemas.

It was by about 10.15 that the plane moved slowly. Pilot announced again that the visibility is above the minimum and plane can take off. Only one problem – there are about 5 other planes in the queue before us. At last, the flight took of at 1040 hours – after a delay of three hours and forty minutes.

After stopping at Mumbai and then at Coimbatore, the flight landed at Calicut at 1600 hours. About 9 hours, which would have sufficient to reach the Europian cities. All were very much tired. But defeating the fog, we have reached the destination.

This is not the case of today only. Whenever, there is heavy fog neither flight, nor train will be able to proceed in time or reach the destination in time. The technology and science have advanced far, but is there no system that can manage the fog? That will save a lot of difficulties for the people.
