25 Wednesday Jan 2012

The meeting of the Standing Committee of National Council of BSNL was held today, 25th January 2012. The first meeting of the National Council, after BSNLEU won in the second membership was held on January 25th itself in 2005. BSNLEU is the recognised union in BSNL for the last 7 years and it is sure that in the next verification in 2012 also, BSNLEU will win.

During these 7 years BSNLEU could achieve many gains for the workers, through discussions and struggles. BSNLEU has initiated a movement to save BSNL, which all unions have agreed and under the leadership of JAC, the movement is going forward.  Let us continue this movement to save BSNL and its workers.

Greetings on Republic Day!

25 Wednesday Jan 2012

The Indian Republic is completing 62 years by tomorrow, 26th January 2012. India won independence from the British imperialists in the midnight of 14th-15th of August 1947 after a long period of continued struggles under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. There have been ups and downs many times, but at last the British were compelled to leave India for good. The Constitution Committee including many stalwarts under the leadership of Dr.B.R.Ambedkar  drafted the Constitution and India was declared as a sovereign Democratic Republic on 26th January 1950.

Yes India has passed 62 years after it became a republic. Many achievements have been made during this period. But much more is to be done. Crores of young people are having no jobs; crores of children have no chance to study and are illiterate; while there are many crorepatis, crores are still under  the poverty line unable to have even a meal in a day. The corruption has enmeshed the entire society. Yes, there is a lot to do to improve the situation. Only then, we will be able to say that we got real independence, political as well as  economical.

My Hearty Greetings to all comrades, friends, and well wishers !

Telecom Corporates meets Communications Minister, place their demands

25 Wednesday Jan 2012

Almost all the leaders of the private telecom companies together met Kapil Sibal, Minister of Communications and IT and put their demands to him. One of the main items was the pricing of the 2G spectrum with retrospective effect, which is in the consideration of the government. The companies wanted that it should only be prospective and not retrospective. Another issue was the pricing of the additional spectrum that is with some companies. The TRAI has proposed it to be the average of 1.65 times of 3G price. Another issue was the sharing and Merger & Acquisition issues. Sunil Mittal (Bharti Airtel), Anil Ambani (Relicance), Marten Pieters (Vodafone), Himanshu Kapania (Idea Cellular) and other corporates heads were present.

The private companies are aggressively putting their agendas before the Communications Minister, Finance Minister, Prime minister and others. But what about problems of BSNL. As at present, BSNL will also will have to pay for the extra spectrum. Whether the Management has taken the issue with DOT and Minister? The BSNL will have to approach the Government for granting the additional spectrum without any charge.

Dr. Manmohan Singh, implement the SC order on Minimum Wage

24 Tuesday Jan 2012

The Supreme Court’s direction to the UPA government to give the state minimum wage to the workers engaged in the NREGS is most appropriate and correct decision. The SC told the Central Government to resolve the issue through discussion.

The Central government has gone on appeal to the Supreme court against the judgement of the Karnataka High Court ordering for payment of minimum wages to the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) workers. The Supreme Court  suggested that the government, instead of appealing to SC, should resolve the issue through a consultative process.

It is reported that certain Ministers including Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh had proposed to the PM that the Government should implement the Karnataka High Court decision, instead of approaching the Supreme Court. This proposal was overruled by the PM.

The Central Government which should at least ensure the minimum wages to all workers, going against that to the Supreme Court shows its lack of sincerity to implement the minimum wages. It also exposes the its double role, on the one hand its claims of supporting the poor and on the other hand denying even the minimum wages to the workers. The Central Government should withdraw its petition in the SC and issue necessary orders for implementing minimum wage. Then only justice will be meted out.

Concern on Chinese equipments – a phobia with Government

24 Tuesday Jan 2012

It seems that certain sections in the UPA government have a Chinese phobia, especially with the telecom sector. China has developed much in the telecom sector and its equipments are cheap. Even many American companies have manufacturing factories in China. The indian private telecom companies have been using chinese equipments for a long time, but there was no objection. But when the BSNL started to purchase equipments from Chines companies, it was opposed by the government on the plea of security concerns and stopped it. But when it was pointed out that private companies are already using it, the restrictions were removed. But again, the Government has raised concerns on security through DOT.

In fact, the Chinese companies are complying with all the requirements by the Government of India including encryption conditions. The US and European countries are only yet to comply. The security concern is more with Blackberry, Nokia etc.

But the Chinese phobia still persists. Just like some media, the Government also wants to raise the Chinese phobia for its vested interests. US pressure will be there for sure.

While at Calicut, I went to the Reception Committee office of the 20th Party Congress of the CPI(M) to be held in the first week of April  4th to 9th, 2012. Even though there are still two full months for the Congress, the preparations have already started. The Reception Committee Office is accommodated in a building newly being constructed in the main Bank Road easily accessible. Sub-committees are formed and have already started functioning. A large number of seminars are being held participated by political leaders as also experts on the various subjects.

There is no doubt that the Congress will be a memorable event of Calicut.

Private companies file caveat on 3G case

22 Sunday Jan 2012

Apprehending that the government may appeal against the TDSAT order which dismissed its plea that the telecom tribunal has no jurisdiction over the intra-circle 3G roaming pacts, private operators have filed caveat in both the Supreme Court as well as the High Court.

By filing the caveat, the operators have ensured that the courts would pass no orders on the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) plea without hearing their counsel, or get an ex-parte relief.
