As per reports in the Business Line in its first page today, BSNL Website was hacked by Pakistan Hackers at 18.00 hours on 26th October and it was rectified at 1400 hours on 27th. BSNL is reported to have claimed that no data has been lost.
The message was reported as posted in the BSNL Website as follows: ” Haxtd by KhantastiC haXor – Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. – India’s No. 1 Telecom Company …. This is now just a Warning!!”
I contacted one or two top officers in BSNL, but could not get any confirmation.
If it was hacked, then it is very serious. What is the security of the various data and other information in the web? I think the BSNL should issue a clarification in the matter to the media so that there will be no misunderstanding among the public and the workers.
BSNL Website hacked?

I think it was for the second time it happened. I remember having read that the site was hacked way back in early part of 2006, if my memory works well, and this time again.
These things are a growing concern for any web site. Even my site http://www.mydataone.net was hacked for a day due to a bug in the content management system I was then using which forced me to revert to pure html based web pages. Since I was not very regular updating my site I had to switch over to pure html.
Anyway, these things happen due to bugs in the scripts and underlying operating system. However, sufficient care is to be executed while designing and constructing the web sites of government and public sectors some of which contain some sensitive information. Some times it is just for fun that the web sites are hacked. The hacker would not have any other intention and hence he/she displays a kind of warning message and leaves the site unharmed. It usually happens. The good thing about such a hack is that we come to know what is wrong or weak with us and hence get a chance to rectify our code.
These days the difference between the cracker and hacker is often misunderstood. The hackars are the people who have intense knowledge of the operating system and the ins and outs of a program/script. With their elite knowledge they do find the bugs that make the system weak and prone to attacks or theft of information. Some companies hire hackers to understand how good their system is. Whereas crackers are ofcourse hackers with ill intentions. They do steal the data and sensitive information. All the crackers are hackers but not all the hackers are crackers.
In the real sense if a site is hacked, there is no information lost or mis-used and it is not the same if a site is cracked. Anyway, the difference is often mis-understood by many people today.
I wish and hope BSNL site was hacked and certainly not cracked in the real sense.
Thanks and regards
