W.Bengal had always some difficulty with its ‘West’. It did not give any benefit to anybody. Having the ‘West’ tag, it used to be always in the last being one of the last alphabet. In any conference, the delegates from W.Bengal gets the last chance to speak. It is the same with the Central Government meetings also. By the time a lot of time have been taken by others and the delegates lose interest. In another way, W.Bengal is not in the west of the country. It is on the east. Due to the partition and the Bangladesh taking its name, Indian Bengal became W.bengal.
Now Mamata Government is trying to change the name to Bongo or Bongodesh. Certain historians have pointed out that the original name of Bengal was Bongo and it became as Bengal at a later period. It is called Vangadesh in the puranans.
So, West Bengal will have a new name based on the old name as Bongo or Bongodesh? Do the Bengalis cherish the name?
What is in a name? But W.Bengal differs, wants Bongo or Bongodesh

The idea of changing the name of West Bengal is neither new, nor an innovation of Ms. Mamata Banerjee, present CM. Previous Left Front Govt. of W.B. under the leadership of Late Comrade Jyoti Basu, had mooted the proposal long back. But it could not succeed due to controversy created by the then opposition, who are now in power. It is the irony of fate that the very people who opposed the idea earlier are trying to become its champion now!
This is what Mamata is doing. When in opposition oppose every thing, good and bad. Now after getting in to power, she wants to do something of having appeal to the people. Forgetting or not wanting to remember, she has taken up the demand of the Left front government. So far good.

The idea of changing the name of W Bengal is positive. “Bangala Rastra” should be new name of W Bengal.
