‘Bugging’ in Finance Ministry?

23 Thursday Jun 2011

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in News

Strange things are happening in the government. Reports indicate that the Finance Minister’s office has been bugged and adhesives are found though not the actual bugging devises. North Block of the Central Secretariat is a very important and well protected place housing the Finance and other crucial ministries.

But however, Pranab Mukherjee, Finance Minister has played down the incident telling the media that ‘don’t waste your time’, ‘it is bogus’ etc.

The question to be asked are, ‘who have bugged’ office? Is it corporate houses who are very much interested in the decisions of the Finance Ministry or somebody in the government itself? Otherwise why the Finanace Minister is avoiding the question?

Will EPF Accountees get 9.5% interest this year ?

23 Thursday Jun 2011

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in News

For the year 2010-2011 the EPF organisation had declared 9.5% interest which was the long pending demands of the Central Trade Unions. While the Labour Ministry agreed for 9.5% the Finance Ministry objected the same. However it was finally decided for 9.5%. The Finance Ministry was opposing that there is no sufficient surplus with the EPFO for giving 9-5% and an audit was conducted to find out the real position. It has turned out from the audit now that there are more surplus than anticipated when the 9.5% interest was declared.
As such, the EPFO and the Government should decide and declare 9.5% interest for 2011-2012 also without any further delay.

The National Council of BSNL is meeting on 24th June to discuss the important issues of the non-executive workers. The National council consists of the staff side representing the recognised union and the official side, ie. the BSNL management.
In preparation for the meeting of the NC, the Staff Side will be meeting on 23rd June for internal discussion and plan its strategies to get the issues settled. There are 15 members in the Staff side. In fact, it is insufficient for such a big PSU. Our demand for at least 20 members was rejected earlier. All the affiliates of the United Forum viz. BSNLEU, TEPU, BSNLMS, NFTBE, SEWA BSNL and FNTBEA are represented in the council. I am the Leader of the Staff Side and P.Abhimanyu, the General Secretary of BSNLEU, the Staff Side Secretary. The Director (HR) R.K.Garg is the Chairman of National Council.
In this meeting R.K.Upadhyay CMD BSNL has agreed to attend and address the NC on our invitation.

Hitler started digging his grave on this day.

22 Wednesday Jun 2011

Adolph Hitler, with his Nazi leaders and the mighty invincible army attacked the young USSR on this day in 1941, 70 years back. After conquering the nearby states, he turned his war machine towards Soviet Union. That was the day he started digging his own grave.

Nazi army moved fast conquering city and village one after another. But the entire people of towns and villages either shifted to interior places or turned to guerilla warfare. The army factories and manufacturing units were all shifted back to places where Nazis have not reached. The Nazi army even reached to Moscow, the capital of USSR. More than 27 million soviet men and women lost their lives in defending the country. It was here that the pitched battle started, street by street, inch by inch. The young Soviet Union might not have the arms, ammunition and the mighty war machine Hitler has got, but the determination and sacrifice of the Soviet army in pitched battle started pushing the Nazi army backwards inch by inch literally. Nazis had to retreat with big losses.
The rest is history. Nazis had to retreat and retreat. After years of terrible fight, on 2nd May 1945 the Soviet Army utterly defeated Hitler and after capturing Berlin, the capital of Germany, hoisted the Red flag on the Reichstag. HItler committed suicide. Japan was also defeated shortly. Thus the second world war came to an end.

Delayed salary to Air India staff

22 Wednesday Jun 2011

When it is a government department, salaries to the employees will be paid whether there is profit or loss. But it is different with the Public Sector.
When the ITI started going down and losses incurred, there is no wage revision since 1992. The question of bonus does not arise. The salaries are not paid monthly. ITI has to depend upon the government to pay the salary. It is the same case with the HMT and Hindustan Cables.
Now the Maharaja, the Air India, has also gone on loss for the last few years. And salaries are being delayed.
But the basic issues are forgotten. Why there is loss in these PSUs which were once the blue eyed PSUs of the government?. It is only due to the anti-PSU policy of the government, the mismanagement by the bureaucracy and sometimes the slackness of the workers in recognising and realising the situation and not taking remedial measures in time.
Now BSNL is on the wane. Although the loss has started in 2009-2010, it is sure there will be more loss in 2010-2011. If urgent remedial measures are not taken, then BSNL also will join the loss making companies.
The workers have to rise, compel the government to change its anti-BSNL policy as also make the management to run the organisation effectively and also put their maximum work to restore the glory of BSNL and its services.
Of course the BSNL Workers will rise to the occasion and make BSNL the best service provider in the country!

Posco land acquisition deferred for the present

22 Wednesday Jun 2011

At least for the present, the people of Odisha has been able to stop the land acquisition by the state government for the steel project of the Multi National Company, POSCO. After the central government gave eco clearance, the state government has been in a hurry to acquire the agricultural and forest land on which the local people depend for their existence. The people has been organising sustained struggle and blockading the police and other authorities from entering the area for acquisition. Police lathi charged and used force, but the people were determined to save their land.
As a result, the state government has for the present, postponed the acquisition. But unless there is continued vigilance and struggle, the government which is waiting for a reprieve will restart again.

No Pesky calls, SMSes from 15 August – TRAI

22 Wednesday Jun 2011

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in News

The decision of the TRAI to ban pesky calls and SMSs from 15th August 2011 will be a great relief for the harassed subscribers. At present the subscribers are imposed on by the unwanted calls and SMSs to such an extend that they are afraid of what will the SMS and who will be calling. And many of the SMSs are vulgar and completely unacceptable. Further, in many cases they are being charged also.
Four times the TRAI has postponed the decisions earlier due to pressure from the telecom and advertising companies who get the maximum benefits from the same. There should be severe punishment for violating these orders.
Let us hope this decision will be implemented from the Independence day itself – an independence from harassment.

Lok Pal Bill – No agreement on inclusion of PM

India corruption, Lokpal

It has happened as expected. The government members in the Lok Pal Draft committee has not agreed to the inclusion of the Prime Minister in the ambit of the proposed Lok Pal Bill, as demanded by the civil Society members in the committee. On the other hand Anna Hazare has threatened Hunger strike on the issue.
Is the Lok Pal Bill being delayed further as was done for the last so many years? People want a strong and effective Lok Pal Bill with their hard experience of all round corruption.
