JAC – NFTE, FNTO and other unions should return to JAC

10 Friday Jun 2011

For the past few months, NFTE lead BSNL Workers Association and FNTO are not participating in the meeting of the Joint Council of Action and consequently not implementing the decisions of the JAC. This is unfotunate. JAC has been persuading to bring them back, but so far it has not succeeded. The main reason for non-participation according to these unions is that BSNLEU is taking advantage of JAC.
The accusation is with out merits. Of course BSNLEU is giving maximum importance to the decisions of the JAC and implementing them to the maximum extent possible. This might have created a feeling amongst the workers about the involvement of BSNLEU. Such commitment can be made by all the unions. JAC is the co-ordinating body of all unions and every union has got right to present JAC achievements as the achievements of that union also.
My appeal to all these unions is to come back.It is necessary at this crucial time when BSNL and its workers are facing the biggest challenge, the survival of BSNL and its workers. We have to jointly fight this all important struggle. I hope these unions will reconsider ther=ir decision.

Well done Mr. Upadhyay, CMD BSNL!

The recent instructions issued by the CMD BSNL curtailing unnecessary Long Term Management Courses of DoPT for BSNL officers in view of the acute financial condition of BSNL is a correct decision. These trainings involves lakhs of rupees but, the company is not getting any benefits from these due to various reasons. The matter was brought to the notice of the CMD by the JAC. I appreciate the present decision of the BSNL Board which is in the correct direction.

Won’t Video Conference be sufficient?

10 Friday Jun 2011

There are a lot of tours undertaken by the top management in BSNL, which cost a fotune for the company, when it is reeling under severe financial crunch.

I have suggested to the CMD BSNL during the meeting with him on 9th June that these tours can be reduced to the minimum by holding video Conferences, through which much time can be saved. CMD stated that he has already started the same. Our further suggestion is that the same be exended up to SSA levels, which will save time and money.

Settlement of Pension Revision Issues of pre-2007 BSNL Retirees

10 Friday Jun 2011

It was after sustained and serious struggles that we were able to get the decision and orders on the Pension Revision of the pre-2007 retirees. In fact this was one of the main dmands of the two strikes orgnnised by the Joint Action Committee of BSNL Unions /Associations in April and December 2010. But even after issuing the orders, its implementation is getting delayed. Neither the concerned SSAs are completing the process and sending it to CCA, or wherever it has been sent to CCA the orders and payment of arrears have not been paid.
It is in this context, I along with other leaders of BSNLEU as also JAC met Shri R.K.Upadhyay, CMD BSNL and also Shri S.C.Misra, Member (Services), DOT and demanded early fixation and payment of arrears to the concerned pensioners. Both agreed to the urgency of the problem and assured that all efforts will be made to settle these cases. Much pressure is required at the field level also.

Almost all private telcos involved in the 2G scam

The Enforcement Director Shri Arun Mathur disposing before the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) has informed that the following private telecom companies are being investigated in the 2G scam. These are Unitech Wireless, Swan Telecom, Loop Telecom, S-Tel Ltd., Videocon Telecom, Idea Cellular, Tata Teleservices, Sistema Shyam Telecom, Alliance Infratech ( Etisalat DB) and Spice Telecommunication (which merged with Idea Cellular). As can be seen almost all the major private companies are involved.
But whether any action will be taken like cancellation of licence, imposing heavy penalty, filing criminal cases etc.against them? It is doubtful since they are powerful people. But any how,let us wait and see to what extent the government will go.

ILO Calls for Social Justice and social protection for workers

09 Thursday Jun 2011

A report by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) named ‘A New Era of Social Justice’, has called upon the governments to ensure social justice and Social protection of workers. It cautioned the governments against persuing policies that give precedence to economic goals over social environments as it could aggravate unrest, as has been seen in the Arab countries recently.
The report also called upon the governments to invest in social protection of the millions of workers which will not cost them much. It cautioned the increasing joblessness and low quality job traps which will result in unrest and further problems.
Will the Government of India act on the ILO report? Or will it simply ignore the same as in the case of implementing the other ILO Resolutions on right to organise etc?
(Inputs from a report in Business Line)

A House for Rs. 170.18 Crore!

08 Wednesday Jun 2011

The Indian Rich want to show their huge wealth and also to enjoy the same.
Look in to the report in the Economic Times ( 8th June) on the front page. Sandeep Jajodia, owner of the Monnet Ispat and Energy has purchased a bungalow in South Delhi for Rs. 170.18 crore! It comes to Rs.80,000 per square foot. The stamp duty comes to Rs. 20.21 crore!
The number of super rich in India is increasing every day. But on the other side, there are crores of people who barely earn Rs. 20/ per day. This inequality is increasing by leaps and bounds.
The neo-liberal policy adopted by the Central Government has given every chance for the rich to become super-rich. But no benefits to the down trodden and toiling masses!
There is no other way but to fight against this inhuman discrimination and injustice.

Post Office SB interest rate to be increased to 4%

08 Wednesday Jun 2011

The interest on the Savings Bank Accounts in the Post Offices may be increased to 4% from the present 3.5% if the report of the government committee headed by the RBI Deputy Governor Smt. Shyamal Gopinath is accepted. The committee has recommended to increase the rate to 4%. In fact, the interest in PO SB, which are mostly used by the employees and the common people has been very low comapared to the loan rate which has been going high and higher. The recommendations will give some relief to the SB Account holders.
Another recommendation is that the annual investment limit in the Public Provident Fund (PPF) has been increased from Rs. 70,000 to Rs. one lakh.
