Mangal Pandey was hanged on 8th April 1857 by the British.

Who was Mangal Pandey? Mangal Pandey was the person who fired the first shot against the British on 29th March 1857 which started the First War of Independence, “sepoy Mutiny” according to British rulers. Mangal Pandey was a sepoy in the 34th Infantry stationed at Barrackpore near Dum Dum. The British officers wanted the Indian sepoys to use cartridges greased by animal fat which was not acceptable to the sepoys. Protesting the insistence of British Officers compelling to use the greased cartridges , Mangal Pandey shot a British Sergeant and inflicted a wound on the Adjutant by sword in the parade ground at Barrackpore.

This was a starting point for the mutiny. Regiments after regiments revolted and the first war of Independence started.

Mangal Pandey was courtmarshalled and hanged on 8th April 1857.

I pay my respectful homage to this great hero who took the first herioic step for India’s freedom and became Martyr.

Massive support to Anna Hazare in his fight against corruption

Anna Hazare, India corruption

The Hunger strike by Gandhian and social activist Anna Hazare has unleashed a mighty force of the people all over the country. Massive support is coming in his fight against corruption. Thousands of people and activists are visiting Jantar Mantar where Anna Hazare is on hunger strike. In many cities and towns, people are sitting on hunger strike in solidarity. It is growing in to a mass movement.

Instead of taking a confronting position, the Government should immediately discuss with Hazare and others for drafting a fool-proof Lokpal bill and adopting the same in the next session of the Parliament itself. This will be one strong message against those committing corrupt practices and looting the country and people.

More PSU disinvestments- that too at discount

07 Thursday Apr 2011

It seems that the government wants to disinvest maximum shares of the PSUs, even if it is given at discount, much less than the original value.Does the government feel that they may not get a chance after next elections to sell these shares?

It is reported in today’s papers that further shares of Power Finance Corporation (PFC), ONGC, SAIL, Hindustan Copper Limited(HCL) and Minerals and Metal Trading Corporation (MMTC) are going to be disinvested at discount rates. The government gradually wants to disinvest up to 49%, keep it there for sometime and then privatise disinvesting further shares thus handing over all these valuable assets to the private big business.

The working class has to organise sustained struggle to stop this loot of public assets with the support of the people.

Hearty Congratulations, Andhra Comrades!

My hearty congratulations to BSNL Comrades and management of A.P.Circle for their excellent performance in capturing more than 35,000 connections through MNP from other service providers. It is a record all over the country. As per reports available with me only one more circle, Orissa, have got benefit from the MNP (Mobile Number Portability) since it has started. Orissa gained 2,084 lines. A detailed report has come in today’s (7th April 2011) Business Standard.

I personally congratulated Shri Rajeev Aggerval, CGM as also Com.J.Sampth Rao, Circle Secretary and Com. P.Asokababu, Dy.General secretary BSNLEU for this excellent performance. All of them stated that this success could be achieved through the combined efforts of the management and the entire staff. Maximum efforts were made for customer care and also publicising our services, which helped us, they told. This can be done in other circles also.

The Joint Action Committee has decided to observe “Customer Delight Month ” from 1st to 31st May 2011 in an effort to improve the services and to interact with the customers. All of us have to make it successful. Let BSNL restore its number one telecom operator position in the country.

Hindus & Muslims jointly build Mandir and Mazjid

06 Wednesday Apr 2011

A few weeks back I had mentioned about the close co-ordination between Hindus and Muslims In Bijapur, where a Hindu becomes the convener of a Miladi-Nabi function and a Muslim that of a Hindu festival.

Now today’s Hindu Daily reports a very welcome news in the same line. In Rui, which is in the Latur District of Maharashtra, Muslims and Hindus, in fact all the people of the village, have jointly reconstructed a Ram Temple destroyed 275 years back along with a Mazjid destroyed during 1947-48.
Communal harmony will go in a long way for a better and peaceful life.

Corporate czars questioned by PAC

06 Wednesday Apr 2011

Almost all the heads/ CEOs of private telecom companies seems to be involved in the infamous 2G scam. In addition to the former communications Minister A.Raja and his bureaucrat aides, these leaders of India Inc are being questioned one after another. They have all been questioned by CBI earlier.

Now it is the turn of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Parliament. Within the last two days the PAC has questioned Ratan Tata, Anil Ambani, S Tel Director V.Srinivasan, Sanjay Chandra of Unitech Wireless, Charles Goodworth Director of Telenor Asia, Vinod Goenka of Etisalat DB etc. Niira Radia, the corporate lobbyist was also questioned. From the reports many of these bigwigs are not answering the questions on many issues stating that these are included in the CBI charge sheet and hence cannot be stated etc. But truth can not be kept hidden all the time. The people of this country have a right to know all. And the corrupt, both the bribe-giver and the bribe-taker should be punished. Those who played with the assets and funds of the nation should be seriously dealt with.

Fast unto death by Anna Hazare against corruption

Anna Hazare, corruption, India corruption

The fast-unto-death by Anna Hazare, Gandhian and noted social activist, demanding drafting and passing of the Jan Lokpal Bill with the participation of citizens /civil society activists has brought the fight against corruption to a new height.

Anna Hazare started his fast-unto-death at the Jantar Mantar premises in New Delhi on 5th April after the government failed to act upon his proposals for a joint committee for drafting of the bill with 50% citizens and 50% government. The Lokpal Bill has been with the Government for the last 42 years. This year also the government wants to have the same exercise by which it will be presented in Parliament, then send it to a committee and then frozen.

The continuous exposal of scams involving lakhs of crore of rupees like 2G, Adarsh, CWG, Antrix-Devas etc. etc. have put the government in a tight corner with many ministers directly involved. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is presiding over a cabinet of corrupt ministers. It is only but natural that the government will not like a strong Lokpal and will try to evade passing even any bill and continuing the existing sorry state of affairs.
It is in this context that the entire country is supporting Anna Hazare in his fight against corruption. The government should be compelled to draft the bill with the participation of citizens as demanded by Anna Hazare so that it will be a strong instrument in catching and punishing the corrupt, however powerful or high he may be. The present high pollution of corruption has to be put an end to.
