The Census 2011, released yesterday shows that literacy in the country has increased from 64.8 % in 2001 to 74% in the last ten years. It is a welcome development. Kerala tops with 94% and Bihar the lowest with 64%.

National sex ratio has increased from 1000: 933( Male: Female) to 1000: 940 from 2001 to 2011. But it has been reduced in the three states of Bihar, J&K and Gujarat. The highest sex ratio is in Kerala with 1000: 1084 and the lowest is in Delhi with 1000: 866

The most populous state is U.P. with 20 crore. The lowest population is in Lakshadweep with 64,429.

Although the national sex ratio has increased there is a dangerous decline in the ratio in the newly borns. The sex ratio for 0-6 years children has been reduced from 1000: 927 in 2001 to 1000: 914 in 2011.
