Clever offer by tainted teleco Swan

10 Thursday Mar 2011

While there is demand all over the country that the licence of the tainted telcos should be cancelled and criminal action tken against them in addition to severe penalty to be imposed. Now SwanTelecom, one of these companies which got 2G licence in 2008 for the rates fixed in 2001 ie. Rs. 1651 crore and is being proceeded against by the Supreme Court has offered that it is prepared to surrender the license and get back the licence fee of Rs.1651, if more amount is received through auction.

Very clever indeed. Swan wants to take back the money and get away scot-free. The Supreme Court, of course, will see through the mischievous offer and reject it.

After the payment of Rs. 240 crore to Kalaignar TV by Swan Promoter Shahid Balwa has been confirmed from the latter by the CBI, it is almost inevitable that Ms. Kanimozhi,M.P. and daughter of K.Karunanidhi, Chief Minister, T.Nadu and who have about 20% shares in the Kalaingar TV will be questioned. Kalaignar TV has stated that the Rs. 240 crore was a loan and has been returned, the evidences so far received by the CBI is pointing towards it as kick back for the grant of licence to Swan Telecom.

Anyway, within a few days it will be known how the CBI deal with this. Some media has reported that this was one issue which was clinched in the Congress DMK seat sharing discussion and agreement so that there will not be further embarassment for the Karunanidhi family.

Restore Work Committees in BSNL for better efficiency

09 Wednesday Mar 2011

A few years back, BSNL Employees Union took the initiative in convincing the management to form Work Committees at SSA level so that the issues connected with the work, efficiency, development, expansion etc. can be discussed and services improved. It was later to be extended to circle level also. For some time the meetings were going on, but now it is almost stopped in most of the places. The management is not interested in holding the meetings since they feel that they are being questioned by the workers. On one reason or other, the meetings are blocked by the local management.
Let me make clear. Work Committees are not for raising blame games and accusing each other. It is for co-operation and joint functioning to improve the services. It is to give a better service to the society. It is to save BSNL and strengthen the same.

The management should restore the Works Committees. Let all of us make it effective.

SC – Probe Hasan Ali’s terror link

Why is it always necessary for the government to get directions from the Supreme Court to take action against the big shots like A.Raja, Hasan Ali, bosses of private telecom companies etc. in scam, corruption and black money charges. If there was no prodding by the apex court, it is very doubtful whether the government will take any action at all.

Now Hasan Ali Khan has been taken in to custody by Enforcement Directorate for one day. Whether it is going to be a cover up or a genuine enquiry. Let us see how it develops. But it is perfectly sure that big sharks in politics, business and shady deals will try to save him, because if he spells there, will be much damage for many.

Hasan Ali Khan questioned at last on Tax evasion and black money

It seems that the Central Govenment will act against scams, black-money, tax-evasion etc. only after pressure from the Supreme Court or after huge protest by the people and political parties. This is good in the case of Hasan Ali Khan also who is one of the big shots in real estate business, black-money, race-horse business and who has stashed thousands of crores of money in foreign banks. The Income Tax Department had levied a tax of Rs.70,000 crore on him but nothing happened.

It is only after the Supreme Court has chastised the government for its inaction and gave a deadline of 8th March, that the Enforcement Directorate has moved and taken Hasan Ali in to custody. By this few weeks before taking in to custody must have been used by the big shot to hide and cover up every trail.

At least some action is taken. Better late than never! What will the result is yet to be known.

Allow access to telecom services – Home Ministry

08 Tuesday Mar 2011

The Ministry of Home Affairs have asked DOT to ensure that all telecom services by the telecom companies are made accessible to the Government on security concerns.

The issue first started with Blackberry services which is provided by the Research in Motion (RIM), a company based in Canada. Despite continuous directions, RIM had not given the Government of India access to Enterprise Server (BES), although after much efforts it gave access in the case of Blackberry Messenger Services (BMS) and Blackberry Internet Services (BIS). The government gave many warnings and ultimate dates, but the company did not implement the directions.

It is in this context that Ministry of Home Affairs have now asked the DOT to issue notices to all telecom companies to provide access to government for all telecom services by March 2001.

Even if this last date is not complied with by the telecom companies, their licenses should be cancelled and huge penalty imposed on them. But it is doubtful, because the Government would not like to antagonise the big business and MNCs;

International Womens Day, March 8

8th March is being celebrated as International Women’s Day all over the world. This year it has got the added significance that it is the 100th year after the Day was started observing as the International Women’s Day.

While many women have got to the top position in politics, business, government jobs etc., the vast majority of the women are still the under-dogs in the society as well as at home. Women are compelled to suffer all kinds of humiliation and targeted by the male dominated society. Even among the organised sector, while wages, promotion etc. are equal, still there is discrimination.

The various women’s organisation in the country are waging continuous battle to ensure for an equal field for women. But that is not sufficient. The entrie society, man and woman, have to jointly work so that this inequality and discrimination are removed.

My Revolutionary Greetings and Best Wishes to all on the International Women’s Day!

2G scam

CPI(M) has reiterated its demand for cancellation of the licences of those private telcos who got the spectrum through the first come first served formula and recover the losses.

Com. Prakash Karat, General Secretary, CPI (M) in a statement said:” It is not enough to arrest a few persons. The Government should cancel these licences and auction the spectrum so that the revenue lost can be recovered.”

CPI(M) was the first to point out to this biggest scam in the country in 2008 itself. Its continuous exposal and also of the other opposition parties had compelled the Government to dismiss Communications Minister A.Raja and appointment of JPC to inquire in the matter.

aruna shanbaug, sc judgment

Supreme Court gave its judgement in the Aruna Shanbaug case today. SC stated that no euthanasia killing for Aruna who has been lying 37 years in a critical condition – vegetable state – after she was attacked and raped by a ward boy in the KEM Hospital Mumbai where she was working as nurse.

The case for mercy killing was filed by one Ms Pinki Virani, a journalist and author stating that Aruna was lying in a vegetable state for the last 37 years and as a friend of her, she did not want Aruna to suffer more as there was no change of recovery. The entire staff of the hospital, including all the nurses, who were nursing Aruna for the last 37 years were against any mercy killing and were prepared to nurse her in future also as earlier.

The Supreme Court said No to mercy killing and congratulated the staff for nursing Aruna all these years continuously.

The poignant story of Aruna and the selfless service of the staff of the hospital will ever be remembered.

Oppose victimisation and harassment of Casual/Contract Labours

07 Monday Mar 2011

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in Uncategorized

The casual and contract labours in BSNL were being exploited for years together by the corrupt officers and contractors by not paying their due wages and not implementing the social security measures as provided in the law of the land etc. After the BSNL Casual and Contract Workers Federation (BSNLC&CWF) has been formed, some improvements have taken place. But still, in most parts of the country, the exploitation continues more or less.

The BSNL Management, which stated earlier that there is no contract labour in BSNL, had to agree the existence of thousands of contract labour in BSNL. Now the Parliament Standing Committee on Labour has intervened in the matter after my petition to the committee as the President of the BSNLC&CWF, they have issued orders to implement payment of minimum wages, social security measures etc. Unhappy and angry at the developments, the local managements and contractors in conspiracy have started retrenching the contract workers. Strikes and other forms of struggles are taking place in many places against the retrenchment.

In Bongaigaon (Assam), 6 contract workers, who are leaders of the strike has been arrested and kept in custody alleging cutting of the cable, as per reports received by me. False cases are charged against them to weaken the strike and struggle. This has to be exposed and defeated. Wherever victimisation takes places, the struggle should be strengthened with the support of BSNLEU and other trade unions. The workers can not surrender their rights and priveleges under threat.

I request BSNLEU leaders at all levels to support and give solidarity to the struggle of the casual and contract workers.
